Absolutely. You can't satisfy people who are trying to tear you down, but this is a case of damage control whether his supporters like it or not. Issue a strong statement and move on, don't double down.

I agree the whole situation is ridiculous, but it doesn't change the fact that it has to be mitigated. If I was running the Whitehouse communications team I would have started with Kaileigh coming out and saying:
"In order to put this matter to rest DJT denounces all forms of racism. Now that we have semantics out of the way lets talk about actions"

She sort of laid that out after the press started badgering her, but you beat them to the punch by making the statement first. They knew this was coming.

After that you know they are going to ask the question again and now that the declarative statement has been made she can simply say:
"Asked and answered"
"I'll refer you to my original statement"
"If you didn't get my original statement, I have a prepared release of that statement and my assistants will give you your very own copy on the way out the door."

Trump, with his own mouth, stated these words yesterday, the day before, and every single time he's been asked. You know this. What you want, is for this to become a story, which it has. Whereas the answer to the question doesn't matter, it's the question that matters. You are an incredibly simple person, if you don't understand that by now.

I actually think its a great idea for Trump to not "answer" or "clarify".. The reason is simple, do not give your adversary the upper hand in controlling the narrative.

The official response is actually quite brilliant. Because it forces the press to either acknowledge past statements or ignore them... In other words instead of "reacting" to their question, it forces the press to react to his statement. Or to put it another way... its not letting yourself be put into a defensive position...
