It does not take 50 to 60 years for pine to grow to market size lol.

More like 30 for Loblolly pines and typically you would thin a previous clear cut at 15-18 years to allow more vigorous trees to continue to maturity.

As long as the trees arent being cutdown in National Parks for some type of legitimate reason. The US government owns a lot of land.

How can we be in a shortage for lumber? How is this possible in a nation this big, with terrain like ours?

"Will mean more eyesore unregulated clear cuts around here."

Where is here? Is "here" public owned land or private land?

I'm pretty sure a smart business guy could get a new saw mill going in a few months, not years. When there is money to be made there are plenty of motivated guys that will move heaven and earth to get it. That's the difference between government and the private sector.

You're trolling aren't you?
Every clear cut around here in Alabama is done with complete recklessness.
They take every tree and leave a bunch of stumps, half cut up trees, scraggly underbrush, ruts in the mud, and ultimately leads to muddy runoff after pouring rains

More of an issue caused by decades of prior sell outs.

Also could have been using hemp for products we cut trees down for that’s not lumber. Takes less time to grow.

No kidding.

It’s almost like Elon/Trump didn’t think this through.

Colorado could use some logging. There’s a lot of old and dead trees sitting in the forest that either needs to burn up in a fire or be taken away. I’m assuming a lot of national parks are the same way. The logging of course needs to be done sustainably, ie not a clear cut, but I’m not opposed in theory.

We shouldn’t have closed those U.S saw mills in the first place.

And now we will be rebuilding them because domestic manufacturing

It's an asset sell off .... no different than the general market.

The Federal government overspent and overprinted .... devaluing both our credit and our currency..

Don't be angry at POTUS, .... be angry at the thieves in Congress who performed those acts and enriched themselves in the process.

I am not in the timber industry (we are "pine farmers"), but my father and I went to an Ag Extension field day at Cat Island with a bunch of folks in the timber business. Really sharp business people who care more than "environmentalists".

Environmentalists only care about their feelings now, these people care about the Forrest 100 years from now

i'm stumped why he would order this
depends on how it is executed.

You can't chirp at Newsome about failed land management and not manage our own national forests properly.

That's my guess if these cuts are going to be "managed" with conservation as a goal AND supplying timber to make up for Canadian shortfalls

Both CAN be true (conservation and economic benefit), will they be is the question.

Besides, it is a renewable resource and with global warming and all this CO2 in the air they should grow even faster (that's sarcasm)
