C'mon man.
If we are going to be lectured to, just trying to establish credentials. That's all.
I'm can sometimes be a grammar snob, but the content of his post provided strong credentials over and above the typo/autocorrect of a homophone.

If it were only "PHENOL" that was released there would be no problem in that such a small amount is used for stabilization.
I remember in my organic lab the TA told us to be careful handling phenol. It’s a mild organic acid with a pH of about 1. It’s not the acidity that necessarily burns you if you contact it with your skin it’s the fact that it dissolves proteins and can cause pretty bad chemical burns.

Only a button pusher could work in a plant 20 years and not know shite about the process.
Why don't you lecture me about the process? Let's talk Direct Chlorination, Oxyhydrochlorination, Cracking or maybe Absorption and Distillation. Why don't you tell me what catalyst is used in Oxyhydrochlorination without looking it up on the internet? But I'm sure googling something is your only education. I have an idea, what don't you tell me what else was in those VCM rail cars besides VCM and Hydroquinone.

I COULD be a grammar snob if I chose to be. I try very hard to keep my own posts clean enough to make Mrs. Pollard proud. The depth of that 'try hard' can be measured by counting my edits.
BUT - there are times when I just don't think it is worth the effort - especially if I don't discover it until. much later.
I try to avoid pouncing on grammatical errors - IF they are minor, and infrequent and IF they do not bollux up the context of the message.
I do like to tweak the grammar of the grammar-nazis tho. IF your only joy comes from searching for minor grammar blips - better be prepared to be Mrs Pollard-perfect.

For someone with 43 yrs experience which puts you about 60 something, you sure are angry.
You could've simply started that you disagreed with the OP and gave reasoning behind it, but instead you chose to be combatative from the start and clearly you are a prick by trying to deride someone that you feel has a lesser degree/education as you.
I simply pointed out that hydroquinone is a phenolic compound, while not the base phenol used in industry, it is still a phenol.
Thank you for educating us lesser folks and keeping us safe. Have a good day!

I still want to know their reason for burning it. I have some chemistry background, but not about these compounds.
Just curious.

It has a boiling point of 8 degrees F. A vapor cloud of vinyl chloride from the leaking rail cars is MUCH more dangerous than the byproducts of combustion.

The governor or local HAZMAT needs to explain this to the local community if they have not done so already. It seems the communication has been horrible. And FEMA should have stepped in a long time ago to assist these poor people with living expenses while evacuated and cleanup is being done.

Great to have the chemical geeks come out of the closet. World needs more chem E's and chemists.

Fun fact, phenol is used to kill the root when you have an ingrown toenail removed.
