Vinyl chloride being a chemical that readly polymerizing to safe chemicals is not the chemical affecting people long term. Its to reactive. Phenol is the reaction stabilizer used in shipping vinyl chloride . Incident documentation shows that the VC was inhibited, most likely using phenol.

Phenol does not go away and meeting superfund cleanup criteria will cause a lot of dirt to be moved

Your so full of s--t. I managed one of the largest VCM plants in the world for 12 years and my group licensed, designed and built VCM and PVC plants globally for 20 years after that. VCM is stabilized with Hydroquinone in shipping including rail cars, ships and barges. This is a global standard. How much more BS do you want to spread? I'm ready for it.

Hydroquinone

quote:

Hydroquinone, also known as benzene-1,4-diol or quinol, is an aromatic organic compound that is a type of phenol, a derivative of benzene, having the chemical formula C6H4(OH)2. It has two hydroxyl groups bonded to a benzene ring in a para position.

Only a button pusher could work in a plant 20 years and not know shite about the process.

Vinyl chloride and any stabilizers used in transportation are all bad for people and the environment in large quantities. Everyone should be up in arms over how this derailment was handled. It has been screwed up from the local level on up.

Can we keep this thread going. Trying to figure out who is right.
There is a chemist and an operator? Correct?
Very entertaining.

Chemical Engineer with a minor in Chemistry. 43 years experience.
Hydroquinone is not PHENOL as known in industry. It is a phenolic compound with means it has one or more -OH groups bonded to an aromatic. Did you know that "PHENOL" is used in mouth wash and throat spray? If it were only "PHENOL" that was released there would be no problem in that such a small amount is used for stabilization. HCl was the main problem. Phosgene not so much.

The amount of Hydroquinone (Phenolic Compound) is used at an amount of 5ppm or less. I hardly think that will cause a problem. Does anyone know why they burned it? I do and you have no idea what could have happened if they had not.

Nasty shite. I worked at a SUNOCO Refinery that produced phenol among other things. Burns, numbs you in about 3 seconds and make a beeline straight to the heart. Baw got burned one night, freezing cold outside, stripped him down and held him in a shower, no warm water, ice cold water shower, we held him in the shower for 15 minutes. Helicopter life flight out of plant, ole Baw lived amazingly, but never worked another day in his life.

I can at least confirm this. We use Hydroquinone to prevent polymerization. And the concentrations we use are super small.
