I can understand a 20 something person fricking a 17 year old going that route for an argument.
But an elder woman doing that about an elder man in regards to 14 years old?

There is a difference. "Teen" is like the #1 searched porn on porn sites. Men like younger girls its just a fact. There is a reason you often hear people say is she 18 yet. I am a believer in the law of consent, however, and think it should be a national one set on the more conservative age of 18. I believe some state's consent are set as young as even 16. (maybe its changed).
Even though its natural to be attracted to girls who have formed shapely bodies below the age of consent, its important to protect these young women as they are not mentally prepared enough to deal with the sexual advances of much older men who would just use them and throw them away. This would cause all sorts of mental damage that could affect them in relationships the rest of their lives as well raise the rates of young impregnation and broken families. Its much more beneficial to society that they engage with guys of their own age and procreate with them.

A pre-pubsecent child is not physically or mentally ready for sex and thus being attracted to them is completely abnormal and vile in every way, from an evolutionary standpoint.
A post-pubscent body is physically ready for sex, but likely still not mentally ready for awhile, thus society deems in necessary protect them for a few years. Adults are expected to control themselves and not exploit on these potentially vulnerable individuals. The actual physical attraction to a physically mature body does have an evolutionary basis and throughout most of human's existence were fair game, however civilization has arisen. A big part of what makes civilization work is people controlling their more base, animal instincts. We now expect young 12-15 year old teenagers to go to school, not raise children. Thus the rules.

Soliciting 14 year olds as was done in this case is plenty disgusting.
That's why the representative should probably just shut up.

Without bumming myself out by reading through this thread, it is useful to distinguish levels of wrong behavior. Lumping a 21 year old who has consensual sex with a 16 year old with child rapist does a huge disservice to both the 21 year old and child victims.

I also get worked up when two people rob a bank, one gets shot by police in the process, and the other gets charged with "murder".
Using certain words incorrectly to harm people you don't like is harmful to language in general.
Humans developed language and words for good reasons.
"Murderer" and "pedophile" in particular are words heavily laden with meaning, and should never be misused.
Ignoring that because you don't like Priests and criminals makes you an enemy of civilization.

I generally take no issue with people criticizing misleading or imprecise language. It’s not really helpful to call every sexual deviant a pedophile
This entire debate is simply a pissing contest between (a) those who are capable of discussing the matter in an objective, intelligent and articulate manner on one hand and (b) a group of emotion-ridden illiterates on the other. The latter DO own dictionaries in some cases. They are simply intimidated by their heft.

Right. And by conflating attraction to post pubescents with attraction to pre-pubescent children, one introduces confusion and I think ultimately, if that error is repeated, provides cover for actual pedophiles to harm actual children.
If you tell people that a woman is a pedophile for having sex with a teenager who is a man in all aspects other than emotional and mental maturity, people will experience cognitive dissonance because they know its not wrong in the same way its wrong to sexually abuse a small child. This waters down the meaning of the world pedophile, a result desirable for no one other than the sick souls who are attracted to children.
