I rehab 65+ hip replacements weekly.
It depends on prior level of function and compliance. If you were active before and don't frick around during the rehab process you'll be fine. Hip replacement recovery is one of the easiest recoveries out there. I have more trouble with total knees than hip replacements.
Now, if you were barely walking 100ft and in poor health, and don't push yourself through rehab, yeah, a broken hip will likely be a slow death over a year or two. shite, I've even seen a UTI take someone down (weak already, bed bound for a week fighting the uti) became weaker and arthritis made joints extra painful and stiff from not moving, then the patient refused to do much because even sitting up in bed was like running a marathon and it hurt like hell bending arthritic joints.
Outside of a complication or a quick decline in mental status (try rehabbing a hip replacement with dementia, I've never been cursed so bad in all my life

Lopping off the top of the femur and replacing it with a prosthetic is almost outpatient stuff at this point.
If yore a fatass or incredibly brittle (even for your age), maybe it’s more of a problem, but my mom had this done at the age of ~75 and was on her feet the next day.

Yeah, I've known some people who owned medium to large dogs most of their lives. When they turned 70 they shifted to small dogs. A large dog could bump into them, knock them down and break their hip.

Total hip replacement is a different procedure & recovery than a traumatic acute hip fracture.
To treat a hip fracture, the doctor may need to insert an intramedullary rod which is a long painful recovery. If its just her femoral neck & no displacement then it can be fixed minimally invasive with some screws.
Just depends on how bad the fracture is.
