Why don't you do a FOIA request to see the accounting of where your property taxes are spent?

I'll give you the top two answers in most areas.

Health and hospitals
Public schools
Maintaining and operating local government

Pre woodrow wilson there was zero income tax or property tax.

Just saying!

My personal opinion on homeowner taxes, is that you should be “locked” at the price point you bought the house for.
Let new owners absorb whatever the value is when they purchase the property and new tax assessment.
There is no reason in hell taxes should continue to rise because you made a quality investment.
Especially because of folks ability to adjust every year at higher rates with fixed incomes in lots of cases.
Federal crime IMO.

Actually don't have an issue with that

In places with higher property taxes people can get squeezed because of their home appreciation.

Property rights reminds me of George Carlin..."you have no rights in this country, just temporary privileges that the government can take away at any time."

Property taxes are slavery. You can never be free from government as long as they can tax you to live on your own land.

What did they do that dropped it?

What was the policy change?

2023 legislative session passed a bill to increase the Homestead Exemption and do some tax compression as well. There was intra-Republican disagreement on which way to go. Homestead Exemption preferred by homeowners and businesses prefer the latter (since they can't use Homestead). A hybrid model was passed. It then went on the ballot last month and was approved by voters.

Texas should probably tweak the balance a bit more from property to sales, but it’s worth noting that a property tax does incentivize commercial property owners to monetize their land…which better serves the economy of the state. Louisiana should try it.

I've often wondered if it also incentivizes redevelopment of blighted property and neighborhoods too. Their values are lower and therefore their taxes are lower. If one was willing, you could effectively choose a lower tax rate by buying those homes than buying one in a more expensive neighborhood.

For now. I believe it's due to expire but we'll see. Can't imagine letting that lapse is popular for either party.

Everyone keeps mentioning the State getting funding from property taxes. Property taxes only go to counties or in some cases cities. State don't get a thing. I don't live in Texas, so I could be wrong.

You are. Especially when it comes to schools. Austin, Dallas, etc effectively pay for schools in the other counties through "recapture."

You don't hear much bitching about that on this website. .

Lots of places limit or stop these increases for senior citizens to avoid this issue.

im down to 8k, not great but down. Not sure how you are so cheap.

It's like medical insurance, if you have a bus load of kids, the schools are good and you get your money's worth. Once they are out of HS, you pay more than your fair share.

I don't understand how everyone's property tax increases aren't capped. In Oklahoma, a Homestead Exemption property and Ag Land can only go up 3% per year. Everything else 5%.

Texas has a 10% cap, but since its metros are expanding rapidly, it gets maxed out basically every year, so that doesn't help much.
