Only in bizarro world is complete sexual repression equated with "freedom for women"

Israeli model Bar Refaeli has starred in an Israeli clothing company’s advert that depicts her taking off a niqab in a campaign titled “freedom is basic.”
The advert was published Oct. 29 on Instagram and YouTube. On Instagram, the company has just over 60,000 followers. The YouTube video has been viewed over 50,000 times as of Oct. 31.

Marwa Balkar, 25, was among the first to share the video on Twitter, after seeing it on Instagram.
“I felt like vomiting,” she told BuzzFeed News, via Twitter DMs. “I sat there telling myself MAYBE there’s a different message I’m not getting from this. I told myself there is NO WAY that someone so famous would do something so blatantly Islamophobic, but I found no justification.”

My entire life I've been lectured by feminists that marriage is inherently coercive and there's no true consent blah blah blah etc. etc.
Oh, but when it comes to LITERALLY forcing a woman to cover up her entire body, why, that is freedom at it's most essential!

I would hit that shite often....

She is correct. Taking off that niqab and not getting killed for it shows a lack of respect for that culture.

There is nothing more bizarre than the Left's infatuation with Islam. It is impossible to reconcile until you understand that the root cause is their anti-West views.

I don't think she gets it. With Islam she doesn't get to take off her hijab.

It's perfect. The Left fakes being Pro-Islam, and the Muslims fake being Left.

I'd say she's the exact opposite, given what those people do to infidels.

This is where the OT would say, "Oh she'd get it...."

Who forces American Muslim women to cover their bodies?

EVERYTHING about Islam is ----- LITERALLY ---- against their core beliefs.

I mean, there are only a few countries where the head covering is mandatory. Some places like Algeria and Egypt have made moves to ban the niqab outright.
In most of the Muslim world, the niqab and hijab are optional or is thought of as lower class. The Islamists in the KSA, of course, make it mandatory, as do the Iranians. Hamas in Gaza have tried to enforce modesty, as in addition to attempting to force women to wear hijabs, they also do not allow men to be shirtless in public. One province of Indonesia forces women to be covered as well.
The point should be that it is the woman's choice if she wishes to pursue such garments. The Quranic argument, in part, was inspired by Matthew 5:27-28, in which the idea of the "hijab of the eyes" comes from, requiring everyone to cast their glances downward in order to preserve their modesty, in addition to something that covers the head and loose, wide clothing which doesn't conform to the body. There is wide disagreement on what that entails, and in fact, when it should be worn, though all interpretations agree that it is important to cover oneself while visiting holy sites and in mosques.
The idea of veiling and secluding women was a popular idea in the Easter Mediterranean for a long time, preceding Islam, as the practice of veiling is one of the most vivid examples of the Arab conquerors borrowing something from the neighboring Byzantine and Persian cultures who they conquered during the Rashidun Caliphate.
I don't see this campaign reinforcing Islamophobia, or even speaking to Muslim women. Leila Ahmed's book A Quiet Revolution does an amazing job discussing how the hijab moved from symbol of Westernization (as in deveiling) to a symbol about women's autonomy (about the choice, whether religious, political or personal) to choose to wear the hijab or not. Until people realize how the symbol has changed in its meaning, in of itself and for the women who choose to wear it, then the conversations about the veil will remain elementary, and frankly, as stupid as this ad.
