Gov. DeSantis announces civics requirements for high school seniors

quote:

High school seniors will now be required to pass a civics exam similar to the citizenship exam taken by naturalized citizens.

This is step 1 in retaking our schools from the communists

Props to Gov. DeSantis

The embedded video is 30 minutes long but listening to just the first 2 minutes gives you enough flavor for what DeSantis is trying to do, and I can't applaud it enough.

I had to take a State History class, which was half US civics to graduate HS.

Didn't realize this was a big deal.

I took civics in high school, in the 10th grade. It was civics for the first 3 six week periods, and economics that last 3 six week spans.

Yes lots of people have to take Civics, I think this is more about the high stakes test you have to pass to graduate.

Hopefully that test won't be written by union SJW teachers.

If I remember Senior year of high school correctly, we were required to take free enterprise for 1/2 and semester and civics the other half

That is at too early an age to be appreciated. It makes more sense to be schooled and tested at high school age. I believe I took civics in either 7th or 8th grade way back in the last century and I guaranty I remembered none of it. Except maybe we that we have 57 uh 50 states.

This is good, but you need to remember that those who write, administer, and grade the exam are most likely communists.

If you want to fix what's wrong from an educational perspective, you need to (1) eliminate the federal department of education, (2) privatize all student loans, (3) make student loans dischargable in bankruptcy to force lenders to vet the student and course of study, and (4) make public school funding completely portable to allow it to follow the student to whichever school they go to (public, private, religious, home, online) forcing the public schools to compete for students.

I took Civics in 9th grade in '51. Do not remember one single first-time-to-know fact about that class. Certainly there was no discussion element to it. It was more a rote memory class to be endured without any context. It might as well have been a home-ec class where we learned to memorize some exotic recipes.

Shameful that it was my most worthless class in my educational history = until I had to take some 'rhetoric' class at LSU.

The understanding of a typical 6th or 7th grader is not on the same level as a 12th grader I applaud this. Georgia where I am familiar. American Government is a 9th grade course. World History is 10th and American is 11th. Economics is a 12th Grade course.

I would like to see.
World 9th
American 10th
American Government/Civics 11th
Econ 12th

How would others like to see this structured?

Require them to take a business course while they're at it.

Apparently that's not enough because we've had to correct your erroneous assumptions about economics multiple times.

Getting stuff like this embedded into our society is where dictatorship would be useful.

DeSantis is crushing it as Governor.

Hopefully he starts to build a national profile over the next couple years.
