Why do we need a plan? Most government plans backfire.
So just give up and never plan for anything? Including things that are inevitable?
That doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

I don’t think AI is any different than any other technological development. The world will adapt.

I still think it could go either way. It could do as you say and cause a job crisis. Or it could open up new fields and more specialized higher paying jobs to widen the middle class.

I don't think it's something that can be planned for.
However.
While this is certainly not exactly the same, it isn't as if our economy hasn't lost entire sectors before. Heck, in the 20th century, there was a point where nearly 3 in 4 people worked in jobs connected to agriculture.
You know what my biggest fear about AI coming on the scene is? That we'll frick it up. That in our fear, we'll frick up any natural transition that might occur and instead of minor upheavale, we'll institutionalize it.

I realize that emotionally, this seems like a good argument. But, the reality is, the government is nearly 100% guaranteed to get it wrong.
The simple reality is that markets are about 1000x better at mapping out solutions on the fly than ANY government has ever been.

Yep. For one thing, will evil AI-deploying companies make destitute the very market they rely on for revenue?

It's something companies need to think about. They still need consumers for their products. If there is mass job displacement in all industries then their consumer base is weakened considerably.

Enjoy the fruits of our labor, which we've been working towards for millennia.
Spend our days doing what gives us a sense of purpose and fulfilment, and let the computers do the shite work. I doubt it'll go down like this nicely though...

AI will be by far the worse thing ever invented after it takes all of the jobs and then eliminated humanity
Posted on 3/27/25 at 8:04 pm to Powerman
It’s going to be ubi.
But everyone should get it. Even the few left with a job.
Now what to do with a bunch of out of work people? Ready player one type shite. A lot of people are already stuck in their phones.

The point is that improvements are good and people adapt to find other ways to be productive members of society as long as we don’t hinder their transition with wasteful government programs that make conditions worse.
The point is that this train track eventually ends. Thats what this thread is about

Right. There are a lot of prominent business leaders warning of what is coming. It really might be different this time. People just assume that it's going to be the same as other advances and other forms of automation. Why would anyone pay humans to do something that a machine can do better and cheaper?
Posted on 3/27/25 at 8:49 pm to Bigdawgb
This will be the largest mass loss of jobs since the mechanical revolution replaced mass farm labor.

Bumping this topic because even in the last 2 months the advances have been significant
The speed and scale does appear to be unlike previous technological advances
And the probability that it will lead to our extinction is well above what we should tolerate

Two months ago you still believed men get pregnant.
Maybe you didn’t notice someone bumped the thread.
