New cardinal: Abuse victims should be ‘ashamed’ to speak due to their own failings
MEXICO, August 21, 2018, (LifeSiteNews) – Reacting to the recent avalanche of reports of clerical sexual abuse around the world, a newly minted Mexican Cardinal has suggested that victims who accuse priests should be “ashamed” because they too have skeletons in their own closets. Those who “accuse men of the Church should be careful because they have long tails that are easily stepped on,” said Cardinal Sergio Obeso Rivera according to a report in Crux.
“I’m here happy to talk about nice things, not about problematic things, it’s an accusation that is made, and in some cases it’s true,” said Obeso Rivera. The cardinal’s remarks to journalists came after the release of a sweeping, two-year-long Pennsylvania Grand Jury investigation into sexual abuse by Catholic priests. That report has sent shockwaves around the globe.

So we have these remarks from a Mexican Cardinal as there is yet another Catholic Church scandal, this time a full report compiled of over 1000 cases of sexual abuse committed by more than 300 priests over the years in Pennsylvania.
Is the Catholic Church TRYING to self destruct??
I’ve always been perplexed - why Catholics and no other denominations? Is the long history of the church attracting these paedophile and homosexual priests, or are they simply a product of the environment where this stuff has become SOP?
Regardless this isn’t a good look for the Catholics and Vatican, yet again.

When a thread starts out "Newly-appointed Catholic cardinal" I'm not expecting good things.

The Pope doesn't care and won't until the offering plates are empty.

The amount of self delusional displays by the catholic church on this issue is just mind numbing.

That is a false assumption. Other churches are not organized the way the Catholic church is so you don't hear about them unless it is locally.

Roman Catholic. It's just a tradition that's been passed down for 1700 years or so.

Find where you are on this timeline of church history and start thinking about where you should actually be.

I’ve said it for years, Priests should be allowed to get married. It would not solve all the problems, but would certainly help.

Obviously at the newest and funnest place - non-denominational megachurches. Thanks for pointing it out to me.

I had this thought too, but in all reality the Vatican only really aids in covering up and doesn’t bring any of it to light themselves. I’m sure it’s SOME of the reason it seems so disproportionate, but the ratio is still like 100 to 1 Catholics vs other denominations.
You can’t really deny that it’s engrained in our society as a “Catholic thing” to the point that we don’t even bat an eye at it anymore.

Where does that ratio come from? Nothing I've read points to that being even close to being accurate.
I'm no trying to defend the Church or priests, but the percentage of priests that are abusers is lower than that of men in the overall population.

That is the perception, no doubt. That doesn't make it factual.

At this point the only option is for the church to go nuclear on their own. They need to expose the full scope of abuses, excommunicate all the diddler priests, turn them over to the authorities and start rebuilding on a platform of honesty and reformation. These stories come out almost monthly now and until they stop the slow drip of exposure, they’ll never be able to move forward.

no, it's really not... it's just not as heavily reported, because typically the victims aren't the same sex, which isn't quite as salacious for news coverage purposes, and the victims are usually closer in age to the attacker, as well...

What you are describing is unmarried sex, not really the topic here bub.
