the idea

Just the news

Buttigieg endorsed moving to a vehicle miles traveled (VMT) system as a presidential candidate.

quote:

Incoming Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has suggested taxing Americans for the number of miles they drive, a policy he endorsed as a Democratic presidential candidate.

quote:

The Biden Administration is actively searching for ways to fund its ambitious $1 trillion infrastructure plan.
Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Ind., acknowledged "privacy concerns" related to implementing a vehicle miles traveled (VMT) system but said it should be considered as a potential replacement for the gas tax.
During Buttigieg's confirmation hearing in the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee on Thursday, Florida Republican Sen. Rick Scott asked him if he would support increasing the federal gas tax, which is currently charged to drivers in addition to state gas taxes. The federal gas and diesel tax is the primary source of funding for the Federal Highway Trust Fund.

God this blows

think all options need to be on the table, as you know, the [federal] gas tax has not been increased since 1993, and it has never been pegged to inflation,

Pete definitely can’t wait to change that and Peg so hard

We should tax our taxes.

It's no more ridiculous than anything else they are throwing against the wall.

While I do not like it, it would force those that drive electric cars to pay tax instead of avoiding fuel taxes

Simply put, Democrats hate the people they rule over.

They think of them as either helpless little children or impudent little shits who need to be controlled and punished.

this goes against them pushing for folks to drive fuel efficient vehicles, no?

So Marcel in his lifted 2500 and Braylen in his/her prius will pay the same taxes on their 40 mile commute to work

It’s always been a deduction for those who travel for business. Not sure how this changes that.

You never seen the tax rates on your electricity bill?

ETA: This is just another way to hurt middle class who have moved to the suburbs and commute to work. Effectively increasing the amount you pay in tax while saying they didn't raise your income tax rate.

They already do. See Social Security.

To make it fair and protect the environment, will also have to have a tax on the number of minutes you drive. Short distances stuck in traffic in big cities is killing the earth. Tax tax tax!
