New study finds a link between Vitamin D deficiency and severe illness

Vitamin D could be a piece of COVID-19's 'complex puzzle', Israeli scientists say, after a new study finds a link between deficiency and severe illness
quote:
Israeli scientists said they found "striking" differences in the chances of getting seriously ill from COVID-19 when they compared patients who had sufficient vitamin D levels prior to contracting the disease, with those who didn't.
quote:
A study published Thursday in research journal PLOS One found that about half of people who were vitamin D deficient before getting COVID-19 developed severe illness, compared to less than 10% of people who had sufficient levels of the vitamin in their blood. We know vitamin D is vital for bone health, but its role in protecting against severe COVID-19 is less-well established. The latest research was the first to examine vitamin D levels in individuals prior to them contracting COVID-19, the study authors said.
quote:
Dr. Amiel Dror, a study author and physician at the Galilee Medical Center, said of the findings: "We found it remarkable, and striking, to see the difference in the chances of becoming a severe patient when you are lacking in vitamin D compared to when you're not," per the Times of Israel. The findings come from 253 people admitted to Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya, Israel between April 7, 2020 and February 4, 2021 – a period before the highly-infectious Omicron variant emerged. Dror said the findings suggested vitamin D helped bolster the immune system to deal with viruses that attack the respiratory system. "This is equally relevant for Omicron as it was for previous variants," Dror said.
Of course the author included a disclaimer on behalf of big pharma:
quote:
The research doesn't prove vitamin D protects against COVID-19 and isn't a green light to avoid vaccines and take vitamins instead. Vaccines cut the risk of Omicron hospitalization, particularly after a booster, by up to 90%, according to the UK Health Security Agency.

Plenty of previous studies have shown this you should take D supplements in the winter if you don't get much sunlight otherwise

So basically, to fight the virus, locking people inside was the worse possible thing we could’ve done.

Ground-breaking stuff right there.
At least it was back in 2020 until the media deemed it misinformation .

I remember reading an interesting study in med school about how people get a lot of sun in the summer and then very quickly stop once it cools off and this effect makes early fall an immunity dropoff period. It further hypothesized that the cold and flu season largely starts in early October and then propagates as more people get less sun.
I'm in Florida so I really only take it as a supplement in January and February

I started D, zinc, and C with a Multi vitimim in March of 2020 and have had Covid twice. Both times in January and both were extremely mild cases. I don't see a need to be vaxxed at this point. In a few years, when I am over 65 I will reevaluate the vaxx issue.

My doc has me on 5000 IU a day and it’s a big help, more than just preventing severe illness, I feel better since my Vitamin D levels have gone up in my blood work. BTW I haven’t caught COVID, maybe that is why.
Edit: I was Vaxxed, but that clearly doesn’t prevent you from getting COVID.

It would be, but when were we prevented from going outside?

Unless you're taking too much it's a no brainer. Cheap and proven

I told the SO when she said she felt bad I would give her some D and it would help and she didn’t believe me

I take a weekly mega dose and fell much better than when I'm off.

Based on Dr. Robert Morgan, if you receive the vaccine post-COVID, your chances of vaccine complications are multiplied x4.

I have posted this story a couple of times previously.
I had a bad case of Covid back in March of 2020. Bad fever for several days. Bad cough.
In a fit of frustration and because the fever had me in bad chills and my wife had the house cold, I took off my shirt and took a nap in the yard to the point that I was lightly sunburned.
That night my fever broke and 3 days later I was back at work.
Coincidence? Maybe but the more studies come out the more I believe that I should never have isolated inside.

There were many parts of the country where the parks were closed and outdoor activities were limited at the beginning of the pandemic.

If that were the only indicator, the population of Western Washington would be on the brink of extinction given how little we see the sun here.

Makes sense. God probably didn’t design for man to sit inside the majority of the day like so many do.

Five to ten thousand a day if you want to have high, safe Vit D3 levels in your blood.
This is really old news but all Blacks need this more than whites as their skin pigments prevent the skin to naturally produce VitD3.

You mean...if they fix it...so it works and doesn't kill.
It's seriously a 1/5000 roll of the dice right now, and in its current form could be much worse over time

quote:I had the original COVID in January 2020. I also was unaware of a severe Vitamin deficiency I had at that time.
A study published Thursday in research journal PLOS One found that about half of people who were vitamin D deficient before getting COVID-19 developed severe illness, compared to less than 10% of people who had sufficient levels of the vitamin in their blood.
My lipids doctor found it, seems the deficiency was also interfering with my tolerance of statins he was prescribing. I didnt know my CoVID was COVID - almost no one knew what it was in Jan 2020. Kept me down for about two weeks.. and two more recovering. A few weeks later in March I tested for the Covid antibodies.
So that doctor systematically brought up my Vit D level - felt great. No intolerance of statins - and havent had more than a sniffle since.
He said, "we dont have a flu and cold season, we have a Vitamin D deficiency season" I believe it. Get your D right! and FCK COVID
