I'm willing to bet you didn't imagine the author of this piece looking like this

I imagined him wearing more flannel and with a beanie on.

an organization that routinely oppresses some of the most vulnerable residents of the city I live in.

This narrative is insane.

It's just a plot device in the game for you to be able to establish the map and where all the collectibles and side quests are located. It's no different than in the batman arkham games.

I get that, but it is also showing constant police/government surveillance as being "good."

But with the way kids these days want to show everyone how they live via social media (be a star) and the still popular "reality tv," perhaps there is no hope for privacy in the future.

That has been a staple of comic books basically forever. Batman usually has a massive surveillance network and works with the cops. So does Spiderman. So does Ironman, etc....

Pretty sure the game is called spider-man, not venom. However, I would love a venom game.

Also, black spider-man (I assume what you're talking about) didn't have a choice or control over the symbiote.

What does this soyboy want the game to be?

Spiderman go around the city protesting "Drumpf!" and reminding everyone it was "her turn!"?

but it is also impossible, for me at least, to not feel some ickiness about the game forcing me into cahoots with even a fictionalized version of the NYPD, an organization that routinely oppresses some of the most vulnerable residents of the city I live in.

that dude must be a hit at parties. how wonderful must your life be for that to actually type those things out and mean it?

In Spider-Man you play as Jim from the office as you swing through the city fighting crime. There’s also a police station like every 100 feet yet everything is on fire and you’re the only person stopping bad guys

some gems from the comments:

quote:

I admit when teh crackle came over the radio about a drug deal I didn’t want to bother. Players should be allowed to say “Nah, those people have enough problems.”

quote:

Honestly if I lived in a comic book world I’d want all of the “regular” cops to be as fascist and violent as Frank Castle because it’s the only way a “regular” cop could ever hope to stand up to the massive quantity of criminals who work for the villains who frequently possess super human powers.

quote:

Yeah, this article made me realize we’re actually out of problems. So that’s nice.

quote:

I don’t want to play as Spidey if he’s going to be a cop, I want to play Spidey as a nimble dancer. That’s why I like to hold a controller up to my TV whenever Spider-Man 3 comes on.

quote:

Realistic MAGA Spiderman would have Peter Parker be a “reporter” for a conspiracy blog on Periscope

quote:

On the one hand, Spidey cooperates with the NYPD sometimes, including restoring their surveillance network which he then uses for his own purposes. On the other hand, this is a fantasy world where there are multiple massive shootouts throughout Manhattan every single day, so I’m willing to cut Spiderman some slack on this one ...

quote:

The game completely lost me at the mission where you have to hold together a half-completed bridge with webbing so Governor Cuomo can have a ribbon cutting ceremony.

This is also a video game based off make believe. So the fact that Spider-man uses it as a hub to be able to track collectibles and side quests is basically the gist of it. You're looking too far into it. I literally did not think once that this showed the benefits of a surveillance state. I used it as a tool to locate Peter's old backpacks :)

Well, yeah...obviously...pretty tinfoil on my part, but you must admit there is a subtle suggestion of surveillance = good!

In theory it's actually showing that cops have limits and aren't always capable of succeeding. Aka they are flawed enough Spidey needs to help.

That's an interesting, thoughtful consideration.
