There are plenty of cities with music and food as good or better than New Orleans, but they all have the same attendant crime issues.

Unlike most that come here to bitch about NOLA, I actually commute daily to the city. I have no illusions of NOLA being a safe city, but it is hardly as most of these "I visited NOLA" threads describe. Destroya could give two shits about actually running the city, but I have no issues moving throughout the city. There are more homeless than there used to be, but I wouldn't put us in the same boat as SF or NYC in terms of tripping over them.
I do lament that NOLA is not what it should be, but it has been pretty much the same since Mitch took over.

I've been hearing this for 30+ years.
If property values and new investment money coming in is any indication, I'd say ya'll are off the mark.

Better pray that another major storm doesn't hit the city. You honestly have faith in the knucklehead in charge ? Might be better off being wiped out and starting over

It's already started over. Katrina took out all the projects and the property values around those area went up. Places like the CBD, Marigny, Upper 9th, Gentilly and Freret St areas have had rejuvenation causing huge increases in property values. Tulane is sinking a ton of $$ into its housing and infrastructure. Area around LSUMC is growing. Lots of start up $$ coming in as well, over a half a billion. One element is moving out and another moving in. Unfortunately the East and other undesirable areas are still a voting part of New Orleans.
Biggest issue now is the lack of police, which is a result of the DOJ's Consent Decree and LaToya. Fix that and everything else falls into place.

New Orleans is in a small class when it comes to violent crime.

Yep, great description of the evolution of the city (or our mayor). I work downtown and have chosen to live in a quiet place with a 35 minute commute. I rarely venture out into the quarter anymore; it just doesn't seem worth it these days.

As other posters have said, areas that I would not have gone into pre-Katrina are flush with investor dollars. You could have bought a house south of Claiborne off of Elysian Fields for 100k 10 years ago, but they are going for 500 and 600k now.
