The one industry New Orleans has left in it - is tourism

I think this is one of New Orleans' biggest problems..... lack of industry or opportunities for graduates.... it's been like this for decades. I know so many New Orleanians who left the city after graduating college. It wasn't because they wanted to leave, it's because they couldn't find a job in their chosen field. So they moved to Houston, Atlanta, Dallas or the West Coast and have never moved back. Talk about a brain drain and a financial drain to the city for losing higher income workers.......

Sadly, this is the biggest problem. Your best and brightest move on after college and we are left with what is left to run the city.

Birmingham is like that.....just not enough opportunity.

Revelator, my understanding is that you are a devout Evangelical, with strict morals. If so, I can understand your never seeing the allure of Nola. It was always a decadent, raunchy place. I know Las Vegas got called "sin city", because it's vices were legally mandated and it's why the city was made. It is the commercial, "chain brand" version of sin city.

Yep. Same reason I’ve never been to Vegas or ever will.

My Northshore friends...""Oh my gosh, we love New Orleans."" They don't understand the weird look that I give them when they say that.

Never been to NO, myself. I am curious, however, to know if you would feel this way if your car breaks down or you have a flat while you are moving throughout the city?

There are only a handful of places like that left for me there, oddly enough with the large fountain near the sea lion habitat at Audubon being #1 on the list. It looks nearly identical today as it did when I was a kid, and likely to when my dad was.

This and the City Park "Casino" were my "kid days" spots for me. My Grandmother lived on Dumaine right by the City Park entrance and took me to both places many times in my ever more distant youth. I also remember many Sunday mornings where the Roman Candy wagon would be parked just a couple of houses down for a few hours.

I’ll never go back at this rate, even with family and friends still there.

Start up money that the crooked politicians steal. I haven't seen that much done in 17 years since Katrina.

Music, food, partying, celebration. People in general really like those things, and New Orleans does it better than most cities in the world.

Historically yes but now? They are living off the reputation of what New Orleans was.

... let's just say; if and when you do come to New Orleans, don't hang a "I'm a tourist" sandwich advertisement on yourself , because you WILL be that sandwich ...

everyone --- that is

EVERY
ONE

knows you are not from the area, they can tell instantly.

You have to have some smarts (don't give me the "I'll stay home" smarts, that's for the chicken livers)
And if you have some street cred you can move about the city unencumbered.
Don't make yourself a target.

You can have an excellent time, just be smart about it.

So you stayed the night on Royal street and walked 3 blocks to a restaurant on bourbon and saw trash, graffiti, potholes, bums, and smelled weed so you’ve concluded that the entire city is uninhabitable now and there is absolutely no charm left huh?

If BR wasn't run by a bigger idiot that NO, that trend would be reversing, but unincorporated areas of BR are actively trying to leave the city. That's how bad we have it.

Have you ever been to a decent city? NOLA is a shithole. You have to leave for a while to understand that it doesn’t have to be that way, but it’s never going to change.

It's not just NO. It's almost every big City. Charlotte is an exception

They're the ones who run NOLA reddit and now they are starting to leave. Their arrogance is astounding. "We came here to try to fix things! People here don't want our help!" That's right, we sure don't want your "help".

While most big cities have similar issues NOLA has become the leader in the race to the bottom. Just the lack of officers in the NOPD should scare the hell out an resident that is a law abiding citizen. Couple that with almost no accountability in city government with a citizenry that want to run wild like a pack of animals and you have the current situation. It has been brewing for decades but Teedy has dug the hole so deep it isn't coming back in our lifetimes if ever.
