I eagerly await the reaction to the company that puts out the ad with images of a bunch of women shite-testing men, marrying only for money and status, emotionally abusing other women, and all the other aspects of toxic femininity and finishes with "Women need to do better". I am sure that will go swimmingly.

Feminist Brian Wilson would absolutely be singing a different tune. He knows it.

I know. I respect you for it. Most on this board are trolls. That's why I was so pissed off when it felt like you weren't being real with me. But I misread the situation.

Oh, and for good measure, the ad will have a random guest appearance of some lightning rod radical misogynist like Milo Yiannopoulos for good measure just to stoke it a little more.

American women are out of control. I may turn to other countries for a wife. Sad part is their stupid dogmatism is getting spread through social media.

It has to do with Gilletes slogan they've had for a long time. The best a man can get. They are implying that a lot of men can get better.

Agreed.

What they SHOULD have done was quietly introduce a new tagline that conveyed the new advertising tack they wanted to take. Companies do that all the time without a big commercial reveal or ad campaign.

Honestly, if they'd done that instead of the commercial, they'd be getting a lot less hate.

Sounds like they want their SB commercial to be woke AF.

Dumbasses.

I don't want a shaving company preaching to me about morals and how I should live my life, anymore than I want a waitress at a restaurant giving me a lecture on how to properly raise my children. It's inappropriate and it rightfully pisses people off.

Yeah I think that's where most folks come down on it, tbh.

I'm mainly interested in this story because of the marketing angle (my field of study in college). Interested in how/if it affects Gillette going forward. Like Abu posted, they've been losing market share like crazy among the age demographic most likely to respond positively to a social justice message. Just not sure if they cut off their nose to spite their face by pissing off more of their older clientele and possible appearing hostile towards males in that demographic they're targeting.

Time will tell.

why does it matter?

Gillette is part of P&G. P&G does massive amount of market research. They get to the level of discussing different shades of colors on their packaging. I can promise you they tested the frick out of it.

Hell, they are getting free advertising here. Yall are all upset about it, and you are just promoting gillette every time you post. If it wasn't so pathetic, it would be hysterical. No wait, it is hysterical.

P&G is, as a matter of fact, the largest advertising spender in the world (by far).

However, they, like any company, make big mis-steps from time to time. In fact, their men's shaving business has made more than it's fair share in recent years, mostly around their pricing and economic models. They've actually somewhat run Gillette into the ground since they bought it 13 years ago; there isn't a chance in hell that their men's shaving business is worth anywhere close to $57B + risk of capital after 13 years.

Call it what it is: a desperate, ill-timed, and ill-thought out hail mary by shitty managers to stop the bleeding.

They're probably figuring that ripping off the band-aid is preferable to a slow, 15-year hemorrhage (pardon the mixed metaphor).

It paints men as demons that need to be restrained and reformed. Not exactly a prudent strategy given that your entire customer base is men.

The commercial throws out stereotypes such as "boys will be boys" and labels innocuous behavior like approaching a woman in public as immoral. Seriously, watch the video - about midway through, a guy sees an attractive woman walking down the sidewalk and decides to approach her. His friend holds him back saying "Not cool, not cool".

Telling your girlfriend to smile for a photo is apparently problematic as well.

As is clarifying statements made by your female colleague during a meeting.

The like/dislike ratio is hilarious.

It doesn't go far enough...It didn't show any men encouraging 10 year old boys to be drag queens. I am so disappointed in Gillette right now.

I'll never buy Gillette again.

I don't buy from restaurants that lecture either.

Someone made that comparison earlier. It's spot on.

I don't mind that they lecture. It's their choice and right. I don't have to give them money though.

All of the women I know want men to men, and they like men. Men should not get confused by the propaganda. I don't know any normal women who complain a man is too masculine.

I'm sorry, but is there really anything wrong with boys who horseplay?

What about girls who horseplay? Is that okay?

I did get a kick out of the boys will be boys part. Do they really think that dad's sit around while their kids are throwing punches at each other? I get roughhousing and all that being "boys will be boys" but their example was as dumb as their entire commercial. Dad's aren't sitting at a neighborhood bbq and just watching their 8 year old sons just punch each other in the face

Yeah, that cracked me up. As if men across America are going to watch that and think "Wait, I should break it up when my 4 year old gets into a fight? I never thought of it that way." Massive fail on Gillete's part.
