Navy vet from Slidell declines award from Saints. Saints take shot back in response

NOLA.com article
Instead of just moving on, the Saints PR dept responds and seemingly takes a shot back at Cmdr. Wells
And the work that Cmdr. Wells does:
quote:
Retired Navy Cmdr. John Wells, executive director of the national Military Veterans Advocacy, was named a Peoples Health Champion, an award given by the Medicare health insurance advantage organization to citizens over 65 who have made significant accomplishments after reaching "senior citizen" status.
But on Wednesday, Wells told the organization he was unable "in good conscience, to enter an NFL stadium" while some players "disrespect" the American flag by kneeling or sitting during the anthem. Some Saints players in recent weeks have kneeled before the anthem, then stood while the anthem is sung.
"Although I am touched and honored to be selected for such an award, the ongoing controversy with NFL players' disrespect for the national flag forces me to decline to participate in the presentation," Wells said. ""Since this award is tainted with the dishonorable actions of the NFL and its players, I cannot accept it. To do so would be hypocritical."
Instead of just moving on, the Saints PR dept responds and seemingly takes a shot back at Cmdr. Wells
quote:
"We will not allow Mr. Wells' decision and subsequent media appearances to distract our players and organization from continuing to honor and support our military and veterans. We, as an organization, have decided to move on from this sad and divisive discourse and focus our attention on supporting our military and veterans."
And the work that Cmdr. Wells does:
quote:
Military-Veterans Advocacy, Inc. is a non-profit based in Louisiana but conducting business throughout the U.S. Its mission is to provide comprehensive advocacy to protect the rights of current and former members of the military, according to its website.
Wells, who heads the organization and is also a member of the St. Tammany Republican Parish Executive Committee, has testified before Congress for veterans benefits and has litigated benefits issues in various federal courts. He recently was awarded the Distinguished Military Honor Award by the military scholarship foundation "Folds of Honor."

The Saints sounded like assholes in their response. They should have taken the high road but instead they let their guilty conscience show through their words

frick the Saints. Not accepting a reward is not divisive. Kneeling during the anthem because you're a fricking retard who hates cops IS divisive.

Aye Aye to you Commander! Screw the bunch.

Everything not SJW and liberal is divisive.

They have handled the whole thing poorly from the outset IMO. Backing your players disrespecting the flag while at work has consequences. The Saints tacitly supported the protest with their comments in support of the players and that pisses people off. It's the entertainment business and these idiots are too afraid to tell pampered jocks that political protesting is something they will have to do OFF the clock. That's all any NFL organization has to say. Football ain't Crossfire, when at work you follow the rules and procedures. Off the clock, make whatever political statements you want to make. Allowing these players to make controversial political statements that reflect on the organization is simply moronic.
By permitting it you are tacitly endorsing it, this the Saints ARE responsible for the content of those player protests and they are a legitimate target for backlash from customers who find it contemptible conduct.

Spot on.
This is the propaganda idea that mass media is trying to hammer into the psyche of the masses.

It shows just how clueless they are to double down instead of being gracious.

Saints response comes across as small and petty.
Somebody in their PR dept. needs a good arse-chewing.

I'm a huge saints fan and will still be but wow what a terrible response.

This is hardly their only own-goal during the mess.
They pissed off a lot of people recently by doing their pre-anthem kneel during the moment of silence for a NOPD officer killed in the line of duty.

I know most here, like myself, have LONG AGO quit watching the nfl games, however to let you know there is a big push from complete abstinence of nfl viewing Nov 12, Memorial Day weekend, no viewing - no attendance, empty stadiums nationwide

The Saints and entire NFL can go to hell.

I’ve had season tickets for 20 years and I am finding it hard to justify renewing them next season. Having served in the military, I will always stand with my brothers and sisters who wear a uniform everyday vs those who only wear them on Sunday

This won't end well for the Saints. You don't want to piss off your fan base, dummies - especially your Republican Northshore fans, and those who are veterans. Their PR department must be full of liberal yankee transplants not to realize this.

I will not be surprised when I see a "correction" or an "apology" by the end of today.
