NATO. What do we get out of it?

The entire alliance is reliant on US military power. Our military is stronger than the rest of the alliance combined. So Europe gets to hide under or wing, but what do we get?
Do we get discounted goods/services/commodities from other member states? What about complete control of the decision making?
Why don’t we get these things from what amounts to “protectorates” of the US? When can we get our elected officials to represent us with a strong hand in negotiations with these weak euro states?

There are occasional gestures from the EU on certain topics, but I can't remember the last time the US had actual OPPOSITION from either a NATO member, or one of our Asian allies (whom we also protect). We set the lead, they follow. This happens in political events, and in most economic events.
It's been awhile since we've actually competed head-to-head with a powerful economic country, and they've pursued a course we actively didn't want.

We get nothing and never have. The purpose of NATO was to put Europe under the US nuclear umbrella. If the USSR attacked Europe they would likely overrun it and would only be stopped by the US nuclear deterrence. They would also likely kill US personnel in Germany which would trigger retaliation. Since the USSR dissolved in 1991, it outlived it usefulness. The Europeans don’t want it obviously because they refuse to adequately fund their militaries. Putin will probably say that any increase in defense funding by the US or the Europeans would be an act of war and a threat to Russia.
