National Emergency Declaration

For America's bulk power supply. This on the same day we learned of the Chinese hacking into critical US infrastructure.
Giving power over to the Secretary of Energy to identify national security risks and implement this order as deemed fit.

I sure wish we’d fck China up beyond all recognition… not from bombs and wars but through cyber attacks and other means of subversion.
I suppose we’re already doing that by cutting off Iranian and Venezuelan Oil.

Hopefully this is a preemptive workaround to needing some sort of congressional act in order to secure our grid and not a too little too late defense against an imminent threat.

Am I wrong for thinking maybe it would be a good thing for Americans to go without certain comforts for a while?

Well, this is signed on the very same day that they evacuated the Capitol's power plant and is aimed specifically at stopping foreign actors from crippling our critical infrastructure.
Seems like it's an imminent threat.

These things are already in place and mandatory for Nuclear Plants to follow. Basically, you keep your stuff completely off the internet, and any portable digital media used inside the plant goes through security and IT checks before it can be used. There's more, but that's the gist of it.
Fossil plants, and grid operators need to do the same.

Thanks.
Seems to have something to do with transactions and foreign nationals, and perhaps replacing some parts.
Not sure what the emergency declaration is for, but it seems like a no brainer as far as not having parts made in China on critical systems.

Seems like they realized that certain components provided by foreign adversaries can be hacked today, all too close to home in DC. The EO says it doesn't apply to local power generating facilities, only bolstering the supply chain and prohibiting components from certain adversarial nations.
It's definitely a huge deal and it seems like whatever happened today caught them with their pants down. I only wish it initiated a nationwide inspection of all major power generating facilities and emergency replacement of any possible foreign components that can be hacked, and further hardening of any physical equipment that is vulnerable to kinetic attack. That would probably be a huge undertaking though.

Right. I haven't read the actual order yet, but it might be interesting to look at. Whatever these key components are, we have already been purchasing them and they're already in use. So it sounds like the emergency declaration is likely to be for making it easier for the government to identify those weaknesses and replace them or mitigate them as quickly as possible.
I read them as essentially saying, "hey y'all, China has our electric grid compromised."
