If it's the Boomers losing their benefits it's called sacrifice.

But you called it something else when anybody else pays in but doesn't get their benefits. "Screwed," think it was.

Your blatant hypocrisy is showing.

Not if the program is stopped, which is the whole premise of the thread.

The money that is funding their benefits is not theirs. It's the money that is being paid in by younger people, just like their money went to pay for people older than them.

If the program is stopped, the money stops. The benefits stop.

That's the problem, dullard.

"Whatever that looks like" is going to result in SOMEONE not getting benefits even if they paid in.

That's why I posted somewhere, either here or the other SS thread that sure, young people could vote to stop the program. Sure they could. Any time they want.

But they won't.

And this is one big reason why.

Because phasing it out would mean that they almost certainly would be the ones who paid in but got nothing back out.

And stopping cold turkey has even bigger problems than that.

The whole premise of the thread is stopping SS.

The next generations are in much greater danger of reduced benefits or means testing.

What does that have to do with stopping SS? Connect the dots to the topic for me, please.

Yes, you are correct.

Sure. Happy to help.

Your response was this:

No more than the boomers paying in and not getting theirs.

Right?

My response is based on the premise that boomers will get their SS regardless; there will be no abrupt stop to SS where everybody gets nothing.

The scenarios I see:

1. The choose not to stop social security and leave it as is: boomers still get theirs; successive generations get less and less likely to get theirs.

2. the choose not to stop social security and they make changes to try and make it last: boomers still get theirs; successive generations will only get some of theirs.

3. They choose to stop social security: boomers still get theirs; some of successive generations get something; some get nothing.

There's no scenario where boomers do not get theirs primarily because they are already drawing it or are about to. That would be politically lethal for anyone trying to do it.

The mean voting age is ~55, even the hard core R or D that's retired or near retirement will vote for the candidate that keeps the money coming.

My son does not have a Social Security number. Despite what everyone believes, it's still a voluntary program.

I started a thread here about a battle with the DMV about the issuance of a license for my son. The DMV lost by the way. I was called all sorts of things because I wanted to give my son the choice on whether he wanted to participate or not.

I was actually surprised at the ridicule but those folks are "bought in" to the system.

Your opinion is not original - all the Boomers who you are complaining about also wanted to opt out. We couldn't and instead we paid in to support our parents and grandparents generations who didn't pay in even 1/2 as much as we did. So get in line.

For every 10 dollars i pay in taxes, like 8 goes to boomers.

I will vote against boomer handouts in every election, ya'll are finally dying so here shortly the money printer is getting shut off.

Uhh.. that statement is 100 percent false. I submit the exhibits of federal tax deposits, quarterly form 941s, self employment taxes, etc.

Like your post is like more revealing of your income than like you realized. Like, sorry dude. Like the only way those numbers work out is like you're paying like disproportionate FICA to Income Tax. Like that's not boomers' fault, bro.

That's literally what the entire discussion has been about. Stopping it abruptly and rage quitting on the Boomers.

Break that down for me.

That would be a very unusual tax situation.

You realize that if SS stopped today, so would the SS tax, right?

So it would remove roughly $1.6T from the budget, but it would also remove roughly $1.4T in revenue.

It would improve the spending deficit by somewhere around $200B.

That's 2.85% of the budget.

You understand that, right?

And that's IF none of the people who lost SS dropped below the poverty line and qualified for welfare instead, which is not a reality. You'd probably be adding tens of millions of Americans to the welfare rolls, while no longer collecting the taxes to pay for them.

So the net effect would be much worse for the budget. Either that or your income taxes would just go up to make up the difference.

You get that. Right?

"too"
... and you should be careful not to project that way. It is a bad look.

Roughly 31.7% of the $6.811 trillion total outlays cited went to Medicare/Social Security (excluding disability benefits, etc) in FY 2026.

The claim in your link that "the U.S. government has spent $6.81 trillion in fiscal year 2026 to ensure the well-being of the people of the United States," seems to be a sloppily worded estimate of the entire budget through 11 months of FY 2026. Our TOTAL budgetary outlay, all inclusive, will run $7.4 trillion when the full 12 months are accounted for.

Take that from someone who is 'to' fricking retarded to read a graph.

Social security is a scam and I will never see a dime of it. I shouldn’t have to subsidize the boomers who couldn’t pull themselves up by their bootstraps when they were younger.

Goodness! That is such a tired argument.

Do they teach anything but critical theory in school now?

Let's be crystal clear. Social Security is currently in the black!

I'll repeat that for the critical theory crowd.
Social security is currently in the black. Got it?

The rest of the budget is borrowing over $2 trillion from Social Security currently. That means, at this point, no one is subsidizing "Boomers' Social Security." it is a fact that will remain true through 2032.

If at that point, nothing has been done to remedy ongoing social security shortfalls, the program will go forward at a ~20% per year deficit, which would mean it would be one of the least money losing programs in government, as our deficit outside of it runs 30+ percent.

"Boomers" were subjected in 1983 to a huge tax increase and benefit decrease in Social Security. It is what it is.

Social Security sucks!
No doubt about it.
But if you don't understand it, and you don't, you'll never be able to put people in office who will fix it. We tried 20 years ago, and failed, because most of the country (like you currently) had no freaking idea as to what the program was, is, and will be going forward. Don't blame "boomers" for your own damn ignorance. Wake up!
