It's simple, some industries are legitimate national security situations and need a presence within the borders.

I mean, it's 3-day-old news. And not really that interesting when you consider what people tend to comment on around here.

I read all of it.

And in a neutral market absent tariffs on your goods or absent market advantages based on size or other factors I would agree.

Most of the nations impacted do however have tariffs on our goods. If they are willing to open their market I would look to remove tariffs on theirs.

Absent that I am strongly in favor of retaliatory tariffs.

And are much poorer than we are.

Maybe competition could help them out some, eh?

If consumers really wanted to do that you wouldn't need tariffs. You can pay more for US made stuff right now, you don't have to wait for government action.

exactly...why are other nations allowed to place tariffs on our exports and us not be able to reciprocate?

The world has been taking advantage of us...I like how they are being called out.

He is correct and that system is the end goal but it only works if all nations have a free market without tariffs

If we pay heavy tariffs to export product and they pay zero, we are not only hurting our own industries we are sending our money to other nations. This system allows other countries to produce all products cheaper than we do and we simply end up being a service economy and not a manufacturing or producing country. And that over time dwindles wealth and widens the income gap

Ok. Are you against other counties applying tariffs/VAT on American goods?
