Minneapolis free-food experiment runs out of money, crowds overwhelm café and neighbors

Post Modern Times, a South Minneapolis restaurant that removed its menu prices and began serving free, donation-supported meals during the federal immigration enforcement operation known as Operation Metro Surge, has temporarily closed after six months. Owner Dylan Alverson says the café needs several weeks to rebuild its finances, staffing and operating system.

The restaurant says it served more than 30,000 meals while receiving roughly 2,000 donations, but acknowledged that it exhausted its winter donations, strained the building’s capacity and at times overwhelmed the surrounding neighborhood.

The ambitious experiment attracted national praise as an alternative to the traditional restaurant model. Its abrupt pause now offers a less romantic lesson about limited resources, paying customers and the burden a private business can place on its neighbors when demand becomes effectively unlimited.

MINNEAPOLIS — A South Minneapolis restaurant that tried to prove meals could be free has temporarily closed after learning that the food, labor, space and neighborhood consequences were not.

Post Modern Times stopped putting prices on its menu six months ago and began feeding virtually anyone who entered, whether that person donated or not. The restaurant’s owner, Dylan Alverson, originally framed the switch as a protest against federal immigration enforcement and the sales taxes his business would otherwise collect for the government.

For a while, the experiment became a national media darling.

Stories celebrated a restaurant that appeared to be thriving without traditional prices. Alverson said donations had initially improved the café’s financial condition, while supporters held up the model as proof that generosity and community support could replace the usual exchange between a business and its customers.

But six months and more than 30,000 meals later, reality walked in and asked for a table.

Communism and handouts work great until you run out of money and/or resources

I can’t believe advertising free food wasn’t a sustainable business model.

It’s a long-standing dependable feature with communism.

Panera tried a “pay what you want” model at a St. Louis location.

I don’t think it lasted a year.

Maybe they can find a couple of Somali fraudsters to kick in a few more months of donations. It’s not like the Somali community in Minnesota can’t afford it lol.

This is literally a test in communism. The community provided the resources. Until they didn’t.

In a government model, people would go hungry and the government would have to begin seizing things to attempt to prop it up.

They got 2,000 donations from a city and state that is soooooo "compassionate" and "progressive" when it comes to handling the less fortunate? Only 2,000?

As usual, it's "somebody should do something about that" and then they go about their way.

Give a large cadre of the population something free and they expect everything free. Such a well-conceived "experiment".

Offering anything from Maslow's first level (and some of the second) of his Hierarchy of Needs feeds demand, not supply. Eventually that demand will drown out whatever supply there was.

Basic economics is like pussy: undefeated.

Years and years ago I was watching some show about crime. They had former criminals on talking about what they did and how lucrative a life of crime was until they got caught. They interviewed several different types of criminals such as drug dealers and thieves. They also interviewed the black guy that was a pretty successful pimp. He made a lot of money doing it. I can’t remember to much of what he said but he did make a comment at the end of the interview that left me rolling in the floor laughing and it’s always stuck with me. He said that pussy would always sell even when cotton and corn wouldn’t lol.
