The law and order crowd will tell you it is for safety. Cops will be able to disable a car that is let's say in a high speed chase just by having someone on a computer hitting the enter button. What they will not acknowledge is the potential for abuse. Kind of like the dozens of cops caught using Flock cameras to stalk women just in 2026. I think 18-20 just in Georgia alone.

They’ll mess with the supply of parts or insurance on those vehicles to make it difficult or too expensive for most people to avoid so we just give up and accept it.
Between this and flock it’s hard not to believe the WEF surveillance state is being enacted by the GOP and it’s almost impossible to believe we can vote our way out of it.

I mean cops have automatic rifles, tanks, drones, all sorts of military gear. If they want your car to stop, they have a lot of ways to do it that seem a lot worse than a remote kill switch. I think the steelman case for this is about police pursuits that are very dangerous to innocent drivers, situations where cops are gonna be run over, cars running over people at festivals and stuff. I just can’t get that worked up about it in light of the power the police already have.

No it’s not that I want to give them more, it’s that if anyone actually cared about the underlying issue, they’d be trying to reign in the militarized police force we have, not pretending like this kill switch remotely affects your freedom to drive a car more than all the other lethal tools we give to government at all levels. It’s just performance art. “Virtue signaling” nonsense. But I guess it’s the nature of our politics (and certainly this forum).

I find it disgusting every time the Rs gain power in DC they squander the opportunity and the Democratic Socialist's vision for the US creeps forward......pattern recognition.
