Driving on public roads is a privilege, not a right.

If you don’t like how the government operates its transportation network, stay on private roads.

If you drive a ICE vehicle, the amount of tax you pay is based on fuel consumption, which is a reasonable analog to “distance driven”. I don’t see the problem here. How do you propose we pay for highway maintenance.

But the tax on gas would be there, so you are getting double taxed.

And you want to pay for maintenance? Tax the heavier evs.

You’re in the “ok, it’s happening but it’s for your own good” phase of leftist thinking.

So, one of the key carrots for buying an EV is now going away?

Kind of already are. The more miles you drive, the more gas you buy then the more taxes you pay. But as to the article, how will they know? You have to submit an odometer reading each year you buy a tag?

Why don’t they come up with a way to estimate the # of miles driven based on the energy the car consumes? Oh wait, ICE vehicles already have that? Then figure it out for EV

You know, I'm thinking someone with an EV told me he pays extra for their car tag each year because they don't pay gas tax which is supposed to go to MDOT for road and bridges maintenance. I'll look it up. He has a TESLA (suv maybe) and is conservative as anyone I know. Didn't ask his motive for buying one other than his owning a couple Chic-Fi-Las.

ETA - Yep § 27-19-21. Additional annual tax on electric vehicles; “electric vehicles” defined $150 per year.

Yes, in GA, I pay $200 flat fee a year for the tag on my wife's LEAF that compensates for the lost taxes from the gasoline the state would otherwise get. Michigan is trying to defraud people.

We’re already being taxed with the price of gas.

I’m sure many low income folks have to make hard decisions about how many miles they can afford to pay for

My truck gets 16 mpg, my honda gets 38 mpg, explain to me how that works out for my tax bill on 100 miles driven in both cars. Both are total BS.

You are barking up the wrong tree. The government already taxes that way by having a fuel tax. This tax is a restructuring to account for the fact that EVs are not paying taxes to support the infrastructure.

In short, this law helps close the loophole whereby ICE drivers were subsidizing EV drivers. Shouldn’t this board be thrilled with that?
