Field Artillery is a branch undergoing a search for a mission. We just don't fire FA missions that much anymore. The American public and international media require us to execute perfect, precision strikes with no collateral damage.
FA isn't the tool for that.
I'm just wondering why they're sending red legs on patrol. MP's or infantry units should be out there.

Too busy policing the world in Europe, Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, et al. FA battalions outside of limited applications in Syria and Iraq are underutilized.

Artillery units should be fully able to do this mission. Probably better than an MP unit.

Our guys need to be on horses down there heavily armed.

This wouldn’t happen with a wall.
LOL. The linked article says there IS a wall there. But it is well North of the River. The Army patrol was South of the wall but still in US territory.
I don't know how much water the Rio Grande has in it this time of year, but seems like you would know you were crossing it. Maybe Mexico thinks we have ceded all land South of the wall to them?

If only there were some type of obvious marker on the border to eliminate any possibility of confusion...

Who is upvoting this thread? This is an absolute embarrassment.

I hear you, but no one who Is for putting soldiers on the border is doing it to start an armed conflict with the Mexican army.
Its a serious frickup by the Mexicans for sure, and they need to account for it. But I dont want an unecessary shootout. Not unless their army starts escorting refugees to/across the border, which I seriously doubt would ever occur.

This would not have happened had we had some sort of "demarkation barrier" in place...lets call it a WALL for lack of another term.
Obama had a "red line in the sand"...I want a fricking 40 ft wall with razor wire that has been electrified to a deadly level.

This is absolutely disgraceful. Those U.S. Army Soldiers were armed and allowed Mexican nationals to not only approach them, but also disarm them. Their commander needs to be relieved.
What a shite show. They didn't even radio anyone?

Disgraceful.
If the army is no longer capable of its primary mission of armed defense of our border against an invading force, it should be eliminated and the job turned over to citizen militias.

The barbarians are already within the gates and waging war on the US government. It is a cancer spreading from within now.

Apparently they had so little situational awareness that they didn't even have time to hit a panic button on their sat phone

We've effectively ceeded all land south of a line from Pueblo to El Paso to Round Rock to Houston to them.
