Mexican Soldiers Disarm Two U.S. Military Soldiers on the U.S. / Mexico Border

At roughly 2:00 p.m. local time, the soldiers observed five to six individuals dressed in green pixelated military camouflage uniforms and carrying weapons, which appeared to be FX-05 Xiuhcoatl, an assault rifle designed and built for the Mexican armed forces.
The armed men swiftly approached the U.S. service members, crossing over from the Mexican side of the Rio Grande River into U.S. territory, ordering the soldiers out of their vehicle at gunpoint.

Newsweek obtained a copy of the serious incident report generated 30 minutes after Mexican military members briefly detained and held at gunpoint U.S. military service members after believing the U.S. Army soldiers were in Mexican territory when in fact, the Mexican military had unknowingly crossed into U.S. territory. The report was reviewed by U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Timothy D. Gatlin, the commander of 1st Battalion, 37th Field Artillery Regiment and briefed to U.S. Army Lieutenant General Jeffrey Buchanan, the commanding general of U.S. Army North.
The U.S. Army soldiers said the Mexican soldiers moved tactically fast on the unmarked CBP vehicle. The Army soldiers did not have enough reaction time to activate a 911 emergency on their Nano Shout, a cell-phone size two-way satellite GPS tracking device, which also doubles as an emergency beacon when soldiers are in need of additional U.S. military units.

This is absolutely disgraceful. Those U.S. Army Soldiers were armed and allowed Mexican nationals to not only approach them, but also disarm them. Their commander needs to be relieved.

Before you start trying to hang baws in uniform, check:
1. Did they have ammo?
2. What were the ROE in effect?

Heads should roll for this.
I wonder if any of those disarmed soldiers were combat vets and I also wonder what their MOS's are.

1. They had an M9 on them it was stated in the article. I’m sure they had ammo otherwise it’s just a paperweight.
2. The ROE is great but armed foreign nationals pointing weapons at you and entering U.S. territory would likely trigger the collective right to self defense.

It would seem that a primary concern of being a soldier on the border would be to know where your territory starts and the other begins

The cartels are probably buying up Mexican army uniforms now. All they have to do, is rush across the border and confront our soldiers and they will surrender.
If the ROE allowed this to happen, somebody up the chain needs to see a court martial!

It was a FA BN in this particular instance. Not sure if the individual Soldiers involved were combat vets.

The fact that they're on patrol with nothing more than a pistol is a big problem

This wouldn’t happen with a wall.

100% agree. The article only mentions an M9, but if they didn’t have at a minimum an M4 that’s negligent on someone’s part.

No need. I'm sure half the army is already on the cartel payroll

See that big wet thing right there? It's the Rio Grande River. This side is the USA. The other side is Mexico. Pretty sure everybody involved knew where they were when this happened.

Do you have any idea how many times I carried an M9 with no ammo?

Are you really sure?

Agreed. Now, with the neutering that is going on with the U.S. military, I recall a USN ship just giving up to the Iranians some years back, so all of this is possible. However, I wouldn't have thought it under this POTUS.

Field Artillery is a branch undergoing a search for a mission. We just don't fire FA missions that much anymore. The American public and international media require us to execute perfect, precision strikes with no collateral damage.
FA isn't the tool for that.

I’m not talking about in garrison. On an active national security mission? Were you USAF?

Depends on how you categorize a whole variety of things done CONUS. Now, never OCONUS, I'll grant you that, but I can recall a whole lot of hand wringing about issuing troops ammo under these kinds of circumstances.
Like, I don't know, Hurricane Katrina, just as an example.

No.

Sneaky dismounted infantry beats bored mounted soldiers nearly every time.
