It seems that fast food establishments are moving toward that model. The newer ones all seem to eliminate dine-in
altogether or at least limit customer-employee contact in the dining and indoor ordering areas. My only trip to McDonald’s in the last decade was a few months ago for a quick breakfast before a round of golf. The only time I saw an employee was when one brought my food out, set it on the counter, called my name, then disappeared back behind a solid wall.

I live in rural Louisiana where Dollar General stores are all over the place. A couple of years ago they all had at least one self-checkout. That lasted about a month before they were ALL shut down.

I'll give you one guess... I was in Philly a few years ago and witnessed this first hand. The location had removed the public self serve fountain and had a sign saying all drinks will be served with ice to a specified line on the cup. That's how extreme they had taken it with the theiving trash.

One day half of my former co-workers were discussing how they all kept an empty McD's cup in their cars and refilled it free whenever they wanted a soda. They got mad at me when I said that was stealing.
