So the crazy guy can charge unarmed social workers with his knife instead of cops, right? Does that make sense to you? Why do you want social workers to die?

That’s not how it works. License mental health professionals are trained to help prevent this from happening. When’s the last time you read about a mobile crisis team member being ambushed? I’m not saying it can’t occur. But mobile crisis teams deal with these issues every single day.

Why would you (all) not be in favor of sending a mobile crisis team out when someone with Schizophrenia is having a mental health crisis? It just doesn’t make sense.

Social workers deal with people in controlled settings, for the most part. What’s their first response when it’s not a controlled setting and things go sideways?Or when there’s a violent client? Leave and, if warranted, call the police. The police don’t get to call someone else when the subject is armed or violent.

Know who else can prevent that from occurring? A cop, and what makes that a better option is they don’t need to call a cop if the crazy person attacks an innocent.

You don’t take the lives of mentally well people seriously enough.

For the 10th time, I am referring to mobile mental health crisis teams. They work in the community and in the home.

You know the answer. You can just leave the thread rather than embarrass yourself.

A friend's sister was a social worker in Florida and was stabbed to death in the same situation, trying to deal with a psychotic episode. Cops would have shot him and she would still be alive.

When someone calls about a family member in a mental health crisis, a mobile crisis team should be sent out; not the police. Unless of course, the person is committing a crime, then both should be called out. It’s not rocket science. It’s mental healthcare.

I propose that you volunteer to be the lead on that "mobile crises team" and walk up to the metally unstable person holding a weapon and talk nice to them. Seriously, you should go do that.

He is not advocating for the guy to just be left alone. You can require mental health treatment when it is appropriate and that is what is being asked for.

Guy can be prosecuted and go to trial, waste tax payer money and the be found to be insane at the time, and sent to mental health treatment anyhow.

Cops were put in a tough spot to be there on their own. There is only so much training police can get for dealing with mental health crisis situations. I don’t think anyone should be claiming the cops were horrible and they tried to neutralize the situation. Seems like they did that and were able to get the situation controlled and It sucks if it comes to needing to shoot. If they had a more appropriate specialist with them for this type of call, perhaps the shooting doesn’t happen.

The mayor can make a recommendation to the DA and the DA can choose to still prosecute also.

In the end; guy needs to get help and hopefully this forces him to get it one way or another (whether through mandated mental health treatment or through trial and mandated mental health treatment).

People just hate Mamdani and will attack anything he does as wrong even when it has merit. He’s wanting alternatives for mental health scenarios to not blindly put cops in these kinds of situations.

Asking for a review of protocols doesn’t mean the cops are evil pr did anything against the current protocol. He actually has not been negative about the officers involved.

As I said before, if a crime is being committed, then call both the police and mobile team out. Brandishing a gun or weapon in a mental health crisis is a crime.

What about the scenario where the crazy person doesn't brandish a weapon until after the social worker arrives? Just a dead social worker then. No big deal.

Your softness leads to death.

The NYPD will turn their backs to him as they did with Bloomy and I don't blame them.

Yes. Because it's worked so well every time it's been proposed before. This was a big push during the allowed BLM riots. Remember? Replacing responders with social workers?

That proven successful? You think a 40k a year social worker is going to diffusing situations where a guy is charging with a knife? Hell no. Their arse is going to be out of there faster than a Clinton at an Epstein news conference.

Sad to say, but there are a lot of dysfunctional dimwits who feel this way. How many posters here cried about Rachel Goode and the nurse? Yet, not one peep about the ICE agent who had a finger bitten off by one of those freaks.

I guess I'm going to get flamed but Mamdani isn't wrong here. We need to treat people with schizo at mental hospitals and not wait for them to commit a crime and have the police "treat" them.

Ignoring that some people are clinically insane isn't solving anything.

Wouldn't of shocked me if the family actually wanted him to face criminal charges. They know that might be the only way to get him admitted to a mental facility. I assure you, the family has had many many years of suffering with a mental health child and sibling.

There will be plenty of stupid shite Mamdani will do over his term to make fun of. This is a nothing burger.

The cops were called you moron. They were obligated to respond. Maybe you should have every citizen alive get a mental disorder diploma, so when someone with a knife is threatening to kill others, they'll understand which department to call first.
Basically every crime committed is a form of mental disorders...fricking stupidity is a mental disorder

You typing is a mental disorder

911 was called because the dude was throwing glass around the house. When you call 911, you don’t get to decide who comes.

I mean, take Mamdani out of the equation...is this really that ridiculous? Schizophrenia is a horrific affliction.
