A mysterious, massive hole, as large as Lake Superior or the State of Maine, has recently been spotted in the winter sea ice cover around Antarctica. This opening, known as a polynya, is the largest observed in the Weddell Sea since the 1970s. At its largest extent, this winter's polynya had an area of open water close to 80,000km2. This marks the second year in a row in which the polynya has formed, although it was not as large last year.

Without the insulating effect of sea ice cover, a polynya allows the atmosphere and ocean to exchange heat, momentum and moisture leading to significant impacts on climate. Ocean convection occurs within the polynya bringing warmer water to the surface that melts the sea ice and prevents new ice from forming. Professor Kent Moore of the University of Toronto Mississauga's Department of Chemical and Physical Sciences has been collaborating with members of the Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modeling (SOCCOM) project to investigate these polynyas and their climate impacts.

Due to the harshness of the Antarctic winter and the difficulties of operating within its pack ice, there exist few direct observations of these polynyas and their impacts on the atmospheric and oceanic circulation. As part of the SOCCOM project, robotic profiling floats capable of operating under sea ice have deployed in the region for the past number of years. Last month, one of these floats surfaced inside the Weddell Sea polynya, making contact with researchers and providing unique data on its existence. With these new ocean measurements, along with space-based observations and climate models, comes the possibility that these polynyas' secrets and their impacts on the climate may finally be revealed.

Yay! We get to see more alarmist global warming propaganda!

I shot 20 cans of old white rain hair spray a few weekends ago.

Sorry for having fun.

So we're back to global warming again instead of climate change?

Yes, the ice is getting so deep and piled high with global cooling that the ice cannot support itself and is collapsing.

Like a fat girl in an aluminum chair from China.

I have no idea. However expect a cold winter: Solar Minimum is Coming

It's not like there are 91 volcanoes under Antarctic...

Oh wait.

I think this is a slam dunk on the effect of sea monkeys. Never buy anything from the back of a comic book. Look what happens.

Global average temperatures rise, climate changes. Not that difficult a concept to grasp.

have you ever actually looked at the complicated shell game that is the global average temperature numbers we are given? Anyone with a rudimentary understanding of statistics is forced to conclude that the figures we get are a fantasy

Being sea ice, I don't see any water levels rising on those million dollar homes built 20 feet from the water's edge.

I do have a background that involves heavy statistics, and the numbers are just fine.

More importantly, the underlying science that drives these changes has been known about since the 1850's. How to measure temperatures even longer.

Though something also tells me you don't feel this way when it comes to The National Weather service issuing you flood and wind advisory warnings for upcoming hurricanes landings in your area? Something tells me you don't label that fake news.

Temperature collection and the infrastructure underlying it is one of the most stable and well established constructs in human civilization. Even during WWII when we were at war, adversaries and the underlying weather infrastructure remained cooperative and operational. I have no reason to doubt that the temperature in Denver right now is 68 with little deviation.
