Mardi Gras is losing N.O. money!

Mayor Moreno wants to tax carnival riders because new Tulane study alleges N.O. loses money on Mardi Gras despite the millions of tax dollars and billion dollar economic benefit.
Interestingly, Tulane issued the study linked below a few years ago which said the exact opposite - that N.O. gained 28 million net. The same Tulane professor (Weiss) now says N.O. LOSES MONEY on Mardi Gras and thus needs a tax on the folks who provide the city free entertainment out of their own pockets.

OK tax the parade riders but only if you also tax the Essence Fest organizers.

Essence Fest is asking for a subsidy - 11 million. They still haven't paid their contractors from last year.

“Chocolate City” loses money?

Sounds like Tulane focused on the wrong group.

Krewe members throw the party. They already spend a fortune for everyone to have a good time.

Don’t give them any ideas. I could see these window lickers saying you have to get a yearly permit for ladders on the parade route. $25 each and you get a sticker like the old break tags that you have to affix to the sides. You pay the city directly and meter maids will be in charge of enforcing as well as writing tickets to those that don’t have them.

You can throw out dumb liberal Tulane studies.

Looks like the Tulane professor read my post on the OT with my ‘napkin math” from a few days ago and the media recanted her 2023 study showing how much money the city makes. LOL Either that or she is still under contract with the city and the city told her to spin the numbers so this new tax can get pushed forward.
Don’t get me wrong Mardi Gras is a huge money maker for the economy as a whole, but it is hard to say enough money trickles back down to the city to cover its expenses.
Another variable in this is the 2025 New Year’s Day attack. I think the city added even more police officers and added more barricades adding to setup costs and labor costs. So her study maybe a little outdated with all the additional security added and downturn in visitors.

Wasn’t there another recently released Tulane study making the media rounds like the Gospels telling world that it is time for coastal Louisiana including the city just pack it up and move your arse somewhere else.
This is why any time there is a media headline has the term “Experts say _____” or “Scientists say _____” expect the biggest load of bullshitte puff piece.

There must be a different source ... from your link

With Carnival season now in full swing, Mardi Gras fervor permeates almost every aspect of life in New Orleans. Beyond its famous revelry and deep cultural significance, a recent study by Economics Professor of Practice Toni Weiss presents the profound economic impact Mardi Gras has on the city.
Examining both the direct and indirect economics of the 2023 Mardi Gras season, Weiss discovered that it generated nearly $900 million in total fiscal benefit for the city. In fact, Mardi Gras accounted for over 3% of the total Gross Domestic Production (GDP) of Orleans Parish in 2023.
“This economic activity in turn supports tens of thousands of jobs, our creative and cultural workers and economy, and thousands of small businesses, with those dollars turning over countless times throughout our community,” said Elroy James of the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club and James Reiss III of the Rex Organization, Co-Chairs of the Mayor’s Mardi Gras Advisory Council, in a joint statement. The Mayor’s Advisory Council, along with New Orleans & Company, commissioned Weiss’s report.

NOLA needs an outside study to tell them they are losing money with Mardi Gras? That's special. Let the businesses that make a ton of money during Mardi Gras pay for their own security and clean up or put a premium on their sales takes for that week. Surely someone with a brain left in New Orleans government can figure something out.

This is racism in its most basic form.

I’ve been waiting for the city to sell designated spots on the parade routes for a fee. It won’t be popular, but this might be the chance.

Yes, also, the city is unbelievably incompetent. There is missing money and blown money at every level in city government.
Look at that story on how much money they blew just on DJs last year during Mardi Gras. Look at Cantrell. Look at the deficit. Look at the fact that New Orleans is STILL asking for extensions to spend $2 billion in FEMA Katrina money that was given to the city for infrastructure repairs. Katrina was over 20 freaking years ago and we were granted the money in 2016 due to a lawsuit with the original deadline to spend it being years ago. Truly unbelievable. The city just can't manage money in any way whatsoever and is rife with fraud.

That was my point. The study says N.O. makes millions, but the story in the advocate says they need a tax on riders because now they are suddenly losing money. Should have linked the story from NOLA about the loss, which the study contradicts

I'll just take my Mardi gras to mobile

Is there a link to the NOLA story?
