Bro. Life ain’t about working. 80 hrs a week is asinine.

Now if someone wants to sign up for it then go for it but to force that on someone is stupid.

Work however much you want but expect to be paid accordingly.

Elon has floated the idea of having people who work in the DOGE to work 80 hours a week.

Pretty sure that was not a permanent term of employment. They should be WILLING to work 80/wk when the situation demands it.

I HAVE worked 80+ hours a week over extended periods of time for a number of years. When you have a skeleton crew working on big proposals for your very job existence, and NASA keeps changing requirements and extending project announcement dates, then you either put in the time or you and the others around you are out of a job. We not only didn't get paid o/t for it, we had to use our vacation time toward the end, because the company was out of funds to continue normal payroll. Layoff notices were already prepared when the contract was announced. We won. But to take a regular job where that was the requirement - nope. Over a long period of time it is a killer.

There is no condition, outside slave labor, where that can be a workable long term requirement.

The hours wouldn't be that important to me, but competing would so whatever it took to be the best in the office, I would do.

As long as one doesn't take themselves too seriously, this is a great approach.

I did this and took it way too seriously at one point.

Now, I don't take it so seriously but I do try to compete and cooperate (that is, mentoring and helping out teammates especially at crunch time). It's a delicate balance but good for the soul I believe.

Also ... Still working from home 2,985 consecutive work days counting yesterday ... and there's nothing you or DOGE can do about it

There’s an argument for the 18-30 crowd, but we live in a free society. What you’re advocating for sounds like something out of the USSR or China.
I work about 50 hours a week myself and have for the last 5 or so years.
The grind gets old and there’s more to life than money. The last thing I’d want is the state telling me that I have to be a work slave and miss out on my kids growing up.

Got to get people working at least 40 hours a week

We need to pass a law that says that anyone that works at least 40 hours a week doesn't have to pay into Social Security (their benefits would be reduced but they can invest the money they're saving themselves)

First of all, I see absolutely zero need for DODGE to hire all these people and require them to work 80 hours a week/week when you could probably have a handful of small to medium sized business owners accomplish th task within 6 months meeting once a week for 6 months.

This ain’t fricking rocket surgery.

You have a great point, for years Ive been saying we promote slacking in the USA when we should promote self sufficiency and industrious behaviors.

I wouldnt have an issue with incentives to help young folks work full time and get ahead.

I support your observation about decline in productivity after 7 weeks of 80 hrs.

In the petrochemical startup/shutdown business, it was very evident that 60 hour weeks was useful for about 2 months

How many hours do you work a week? How many in your 20s - 30s?

Since I was salary, usually 50-60 a week.

In my thirties I worked 70+ some weeks.

No easy answer here. Everyone is an individual with their own ideas about what is best for them. Like many here in Louisiana , I worked in the oilfield. In the 70's & 80's we put in a lot of overtime offshore. 84 hours was the typical work week , with many 18 hour days at times . I worked many weeks with over 100 hours as a young man. Those who worked back then know how physically challenging the work was. It is a different time now , and I wouldn't wish that on my grandchildren ( or anyone )

Well it would not be 80 hours a week for 10 years. It would be for a year or two, imo...to get a handle on everything they can. If I was young again just coming out of college, I would kill to get on that committee. Think about the resume booster you would have. It is not much different when I went to work for Arthur Andersen in Dec 1996....I had many offers, including other Big 6 firm and private companies such as Shell, which paid much more...but I took the #1 firm at the time, for the lowest salary, all because they were the best for my resume. Of course, a couple years later the Enron scandal came along, and Andersen was gone. I regret not going to work for Shell.

My point being, bust your arse right out of college, get a great resume builder, and the sky is the limit afterwards.

I learned a few lessons about 8 years ago, mainly working 80-90 hours a week running a tourism operation burned me out.

But this wasnt the case when i was young, it was a challenge then.
