Also he did nothing about the social experiments that the Obama administration forced on the military
This was one of his biggest failures IMO

The untold story is how the people that resign have trouble finding employment after leaving the Administration
Nobody would give a shite about being made to take ridiculous positions if they knew they'd have no issues making bank after. But we're so polarized that I'm not sure that guarantee is there, so if you're reasonably conservative and don't want to become some pathetic frick like Matthew Dowd after leaving, you have to think twice.
Everyone who goes to work for Trump knows the falling out will come, but I don't think the pool would be so shallow if post-admin life looked more lucrative.

Huge failure. Basically I can’t think of a single good thing Mattis did as SecDef.

Everyone melting over this is dumb. He is resigning because Trump is getting our military out of the places it doesn’t belong. Mattis would love to stay in every one of these countries longer than Trump will be President. These wars should not be endless and it is time to leave.

Yea, good luck getting anyone 1/10th as capable as Mattis in this role now.

Good for Mattis, get your name as far away from this clusterfrick as possible. Sit back and watch it burn, then write your book.
From his letter, it looks as if they simply exist on 2 different planes. Mattis's job is to keep military alliances together and Trump's job is to stop our allies from taking advantage of us so they don't have to help pay the bills. I'm sure Mattis is tired of having to answer for things that aren't his calls to make.

quote:I thought Mattis was the greatest SecDef pick in the history of all SecDef picks. But you tell me what he’s done to keep my trust. He was wrong on women in combat and he’s obviously wrong on Syria and Afghanistan. So why should I care if he goes? Because he has badass quotes that make good memes? No thanks.

People that come into administrations generally have a healthy mix of private and public sector experience. The main reason to come in is to serve and raise your profile. I’d argue the only person that’s actually raised their profile is Nikki Haley. Everyone else has gone threw the blender and have been grinded up on their way out the door. There is a conscious effort to blackball the people coming out this administration.

Mattis said in his resignation letter that he was stepping down so Trump could have a defense chief whose views align more closely with his own.
Trump said he would nominate a successor to Mattis shortly.

Speculation that Mattis might not last long in his post grew in October when Republican Trump said in a CBS interview that the general was “sort of a Democrat” and might be leaving.
Mattis, along with other national security aides, was said to have opposed Trump’s decision to remove U.S. troops from Syria. Many U.S. lawmakers have expressed concern about the decision and asked Trump to reconsider.

Neither one of us know if this is true but let's say it is. Why would he want that to happen unless it's the best option available? In what crazed world do you believe that Donald Trump is better at military strategy than General Mattis?

Dang! Tell it isn't so!

I like Mattis, but I also like us getting out of endless foreign wars.
