He’s not retiring he’s quitting because he and Trump are not on the same page. His resignation letter is being read on network TV right now

Isn’t there usually cabinet changes following a midterm election?

I recall bush and obama saw some shuffling after first midterms

Obama didn't have revolving door from day 1. There have been 40 trump changes already.

All politics aside......... General Mattis is one of the best this country has ever produced. He was, is and will ALWAYS be awesome. This country is better off because of his service to it.

Are you going to give any details or just keep talking to yourself?

Trump has been wanting to pull out of Syria since March...

quote:

Gen. Mark Milley, Chief of Staff of the United States Army —is the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, replacing General Joe Dunford, who will be retiring," Trump wrote.
This could have something to do with the change?

The one competent person in the cabinet that I thought Trump listened to enough to not do anything truly stupid with the military is quitting now because he's tired of having babysit the little whiny bitch in chief. Trump will install another yes man in that spot if he can find anyone that'll work for him.

I can't say I blame him but 2019 may be a bad year.

I’m pretty sure this has been planned for a while.

I truly don't see how the hell he can find anyone to work for him at this point. It's obvious he barely can after the Chief of Staff circus where everyone down to the valet at his hotel told him no thanks.

I’m pretty sure it wasn’t.
He’s leaving because he disagrees with the direction now being taken in Syria and Afghanistan

The untold story is how the people that resign have trouble finding employment after leaving the Administration

When Mattis, one of the most respected military leaders of this generation, writes his book in the future outlining what a supreme frickup Trump has been as President will he get the Mueller treatment by the Trumpkins?

Anyone calling this a retirement is full of shite.

Josh Marshall calls it "wraithing" after LOTR - when you serve the orange lord you inevitably end up a dessicated husk of your former self. I think Mattis is an exception to that.

Meh. He’s wrong on those then. Also he did nothing about the social experiments that the Obama administration forced on the military. He’s overhyped in my opinion. Huge letdown. Good riddance.

Supposedly Mattis and everyone on the National Security team was blindsided by the announcement about Syria. I had a feeling Afghanistan was next and sure enough today it leaks significant numbers of troops are expected to come home.
