LSU "Holistic" admissions?

LSU is moving from using GPA and ACT to a Holistic review that includes essays and letters of recommendations.
The positive is that it can include look at other determinants of success than GPA and ACT. Proponents also argue it will help with diversity.
Opponents worry about lowering standards and cronyism. Here is the advocates take:

What say ye PT?

95% dropout rate amongst those who get in because of this.

no way
LSU is easy as frick. it was easy as frick when i was there 2001-2005 and it's gotten easier

LSU law school went down a similar path in the early 2000s. Bar passage rates haven’t been the same since.

LSU's standards aren't very high to begin with

TOPS standards are insanely low and people lose their minds when a minimal increase is suggested to save the entire program
this is Louisiana in a nutshell:
ironically, once kids go to LSU, they then often leave the bucket and go to TX/GA

It's definitely a potential ulterior motive.
But I'd argue that high school grade inflation and an entire industry built around teaching kids how to perform well on the SAT/ACT is another reason.
Of course it all depends on what criteria the admissions officers are working off of. But in theory, I think there is a lot of merit to a holistic approach.
If I were a college, I'd rather a student with a 3.4 GPA who can articulate ideas clearly than a 3.9 student who can't write worth a damn.

LSU can't have all those Asian students cluttering up the classes.

Less than half graduate in 4 years, roughly 70% in 6. And that’s normal people who made the grades to get in.
Those who get into LSU without making the grades will fail out with haste. They won’t make it past the first round of feeder classes.

That is racist! Racism get yelled a lot in this country, but this statement is one of the TRUE examples of racism.

Fair enough. I was just speaking in generalities.

Yeah, a whole new way to recruit based on political beliefs.

Lol, no it didn't.
LSU Law didn't give the first shite about essays or letters of rec

Maybe there are not enough students with 23s on the ACT and 3.0 GPAs applying to LSU. By having a "holistic" approach to acceptance they can increase the admission numbers without saying you are lowering admission standards.

This has been used for years in Calif. Predictably, Asian applicants get extremely low scores on essays. Why? Because there are too many Asians at elite schools and it's an easy way to make room for blacks and Hispanics who score really low on ACT/SAT.

Personally, this is what my cynical nature says. I think it is less about diversity and more about getting more students into seats which = tuition dollars.
