As an employee, I would agree. As an owner, it's the best!

Robots are coming for trades too. They will last a bit longer than most white collar jobs but not decades.

You sure do say a lot to know so little. What kind of trades have you worked in "most" of your life? You sound like an alter that is trying too hard

Well, not if that's a nationwide trend.

People who claim that more and more and more kids should go to trade school don't seem to understand the relationship between labor and scarcity.

If lots of kids do this, guess what happens to wages for trandesmen?

They are foolish.

Especially with drilling. Nephew has worked on some oil fields in north Dakota. Done it for 8 years.

Was making $65k/year when he first started. Now with the several promotions, and all the experience he has gained, he's making $225k a year.

I agree with this to a point but look at the numbers. The shortages in each trade. Before the big Mike Rowe push, there were fewer people entering in the skilled trades work force. A lot of trades have a signifcant number over the age of 55. For every 5 that retire only 2 fill that slot.my point is there is such a shortage now for skilled labor that it will be decades before wages are affected.

If you're in the trades, you get the chance to begin again in a golden land of opportunity and adventure. A new life awaits you in the Off-world colonies.

Oh, wait... that's BladeRunner. Another dystopian hell that awaits us.

My point really is that they don't know how real things work and are easily bamboozled by info from the internet. I sometimes wonder if they can nail two boards together.

No. Going to delgado doesn't cost as much as LSU.

Not only that but people can join unions and get paid training through apprenticeships without having to enroll in any college.

But I heard Mike Rowe talking about how they are the best way to make $100k a year. Does it make a difference that Mike has never had earn a living by being in the trades and is nothing more than a tv host with a deep voice?

/sarcasm

Mike is a charlatan for Big construction who wants as many bodies in the trades as possible so they don't have to pay what they are currently paying. Which, while the highest in 40 years, is still not great.

There are going to be a lot of disappointed 30/yo's in the near future wondering why they are breaking down their body for $55k a year. Going to be the 80's all over again

You should tell kids to go get a fast food job because you know a guy who owns 30 franchise and has a personal jet.

Not if half the kids in every high school in the country are going to go to trade school. Like I originally said, IF that is a national trend.

Right now around 62% of high school graduates go to college, 20%-25% enter the workforce directly, either by way of a paid apprenticeship or just getting a job, and around 11%-16% go to trade school.

11% becoming 50% is almost a fivefold increase in trade school graduates. That would fill the vacancies real fast. We'd be talking about years, not decades.

I'd like to recommend that the smart ones stay out of pipe fitting, welding, plumbing, HVAC, etc. of all the back and knee busting jobs. Have them look into Instruments and Controls. I&C guys never carry anything much heavier than a 6" screwdriver.

Oh, and Telecommunications is another good one that won't kill your body 20 years later. Sure they may have to hang a few light weight ladder trays, but that's about it. Nothing but small wires from there.

But they are needed are they not?

I would rather see American kids go into trades rather than import them in.

What say you?

My dad tells this story that happened back in the late 60s. He was a union plumber back then and he and a crew were making an emergency repair at a school outside. It was really cold, sleeting and just miserable outside and they were struggling to make the repair.. Some teachers were watching them work through a window and one of those assholes scribbled a sign that said "It's 74 degrees in here". Dad had a guy make a sign that said, "It's $7.50 an hour out here and 2x time starts at 3:30!".

Average teacher was making about $7,500.00 a year back then.
Union Plumbers were making about $7.50/hr. back then which equates to about $15,000/yr. without any overtime. BTW, that $7.50 was on their paycheck, they still had full benefits and pension on top of that.
