Persistent, never give up, never die, red-blooded Americans. Rocky Balboa in Rocky IV comes to mind. Against all odds and in defiance of the many naysayers, in the setting of Cold War Soviet Union Russia, on their turf, during the bout despite failing to gain any ground over and over; being knocked down over and over, RB keeps trying over and over and finally his persistence pays off with the huge victory over a far physically superior opponent.
