So you can change the actual color temp of your bulbs, right? I'm assuming it's an app. Are those bulbs, entire replacement lights, fixture and all, or some kind of retrofit thing? Because it sounds very interesting.
i think hank is talking about hue bulbs which need a hub and an app.
but you can buy tons of wifi bulbs (no hub required) on amazon that change white shade/temp for not much money.
if you want full color control, those bulbs typically start around $25 each.

Assuming you actually did measure the current draw, then you know the apparent power consumption. You claimed 170mA, which times 120V is 20.4VA as you kinda sorta stated. 9W/20.4VA = PF 0.44. Not perfect, but that is the gist and gets you close.
Wrong again. What I measure is Irms directly and not Var because my equipment is actually in the circuit and not just some inductive clamp.

Hue Ambiance. They're replacement bulbs, you use your fixture, and it requires one hub that talks to them through a phone app. You can change the temperature and the dim setting with a slider, so you're not stuck with discrete settings. Any shade of light, any amount of output.
It's not cheap (for light bulbs) but we're very happy with it. I just have them in the main living area; I'm not that concerned with light temp in closets or bathrooms. If you run a bordello or disco you can get color versions that change all sorts of colors; we just have the white ones.

I can tell Alexa (being a Trekker, I call her “Computer”) to start “Netflix time,” and she will change the lights in several rooms, activate the TV, use Roku to open Netflix, change the stereo to accept input from the Roku, and start TV sound through the home theater system.
If you set a Watch on Amazon, you can get the Hue bulbs that use only white light (but all variations on brightness and color temp) for about $10, if you buy a four-pack. The ones that do crazy colors are indeed about $25, but I have never seen a need for disco lights in my home.

Another feature that I like is geo-fencing. When the first phone of the day gets about 1/2 mile from the house in the evening, the system activates porch lights and such, including a light in the side entrance hall. It even checks whether it is dark yet and does not activate in daylight.

So... I can order some, put them in the bedroom when my wife isn't around... and one night ... Honey, have I got a surprise for you!

protip: hue hub will pair and control/dim any zigbee bulb even the cheap $6 ones that ikea sells.

LED lights are energy efficient and save money on your power bill.
In Alabama electricity costs 14cents/KW hour.
100 watt incandescent bulb left on continuously for a year costs 122.64 a year.
40 watt LED that replaces a 100w Incandescent with the same lumens costs 49.05 a year

quote:So? You are just measuring current more precisely. Assuming Vrms is about 120, apparent power is about 20.4VA. Correct? At this point you can either take the 9W label as true power, and calculate the power factor as about 0.44, or you can measure VAR and calculate the real power consumed by the device. Correct?
What I measure is Irms directly

At least it isn't as bad as Clinton's limited water toilets...

It will, but you'd still need to be uniform for multiple bulbs that are supposed to be the same temp. Get either all ikea or all same generation Hue.

its not so important if they're not in the same room. i have a zillion different types of smart bulbs (lifx, cree, shitty GE bulbs, lightify, geeni, hue, bloom, lightstrips, iris, ikea, smart switches, etc.) and as long as they're not in use in the same room they work fine in the ecosystem. about the only thing you notice is when i'm doing the 10:45pm 'lights off symphony' it happens over the course of a couple minutes for everything to go out.
its actually kind of relaxing to watch as the lights in various rooms slowly all go out.

quote:Wrong board for this, I know, and I haven't read all the posts about Hue bulbs, but I have a question. I saw where it was mentioned to match the generation of bulbs in order to match the color temp, but do the hue bulbs compensate for the age of each bulb? In other words, do they have some sort of monitor/feedback system to watch its own output and adjust accordingly as it ages?

quote:In my experience, the difference in the generations is not color temp as much as brightness. The newer generations are much brighter at the same setting within the app.

I cannot answer the second question.

This whole discussion is much more interesting and productive than impeachment. We can even all mostly get along and everything.
