'He better damn well stop' — Trump slams Zelensky for attacking Russian refineries, says Ukraine should get 'new president'

October 10, 2026 8:34 pm

Editor's Note: This is a developing story and is being updated.

U.S. President Donald Trump lashed out at President Volodymyr Zelensky on Oct. 10, demanding he halt attacks on Russian refineries and suggesting the Ukrainian people replace him if they want an end to the war.

The comments came in response to questions from reporters about his recent deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to ease sanctions on Moscow by opening up global markets to Russian diesel supplies.

When asked if such a deal would prolong Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, Trump told reporters he sees the situation "differently."

"Zelensky could have settled this war many times, many many times, and he chooses not to," Trump claimed.

Trump then lambasted Zelensky for exacerbating the global diesel supply crisis, despite evidence that shows the U.S. war against Iran is the major culprit behind the current shortage.

"We said you could do whatever you want to Russia, don't hit the refineries, because that's a world problem that's caused," Trump said.

"And he wants to make problems for the world, he wants to make problems for our farmers, our ranchers, with diesel fuel. ... We have a world problem, and the problem is caused by the lack of refinereis for diesel fuel. So what does he do? He goes and hits the refineries."

Trump made no mention of his war against Iran, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, or Russia's relentless attacks against Ukrainian energy infrastructure and civilian neighborhoods. Instead, he framed the failure of the U.S. peace push as a result of Zelensky's stubbornness.

"And he's not going to affect our farmers, he's not going to affect our ranchers, and he's not going to affect the rest of the world," Trump said. "So he better damn well stop."

When asked about the daily suffering of Ukrainians under Russia's intensifying attacks, Trump had nothing to say about accountability for Moscow — and one main suggestion for the people of Ukraine.

"You know what I suggest? I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal. Because he could have made many deals and for some reason he never does," Trump said.

"I think it's time for Ukraine to get a new president."

3 million metric tons is a little over 21 million barrels. I don't see this as likely even if Russia is refining is back to 100% with catalysts supplied by US and European manufacturing for hydrocrackers, cat crackers and distillate hydrotreaters. Like 99.9% of the public, Trump doesn't understand refining. Neither do Wright and Burgum. Wright was head of a ESG fracking company before becoming a member of the administration. It's niche was with pumper trucks not using diesel for their trucks or pump drivers. Perry was the only cabinet level official who understood refining in my memory

Trump attacks Iran to prevent Iran from getting a nuke and to try and upset the current regime. By doing so he severely screws up the world’s energy supplies and world economies.

Zekensky leads an all out defense against a second Russian invasion using tactics common to modern warfare, attacks the Russian economy, and impacts the world economy.

Trump is outraged.

It doesn’t add up. Why is Trump in Russia’s corner? After all Trump warned Europe about tying up with the Russians. After all Russia is helping Iran.

Someone give me a good reason for Trump to help Russia?

Lower fuel prices are more important to Americans than Ukraine. That is a fact

Higher oil prices are primarily due to the bear trap in Iran. You’re right that people will vote with their wallet, but they’ll ultimately blame Trump and not Zelensky.

Still ain't happening. Drop in the bucket what Russia will be able to provide. This is nothing more than a big announcement with someone to blame when it doesn't happen after the November election. In short, political theatre. I get it. and it doesn't bother me one way or the other.

But do they have it to export?

They used to export about half of what they produced. And for the last few months they've had a diesel export ban. And the US is a diesel exporter. This deal is simple theater for morons. And worse.

I wish we could quantify the dollar value of the information we've been giving Ukraine since before Russia even invaded. I believe it would be staggering.

The "Trump is in Russia's corner" narratives are ridiculous. He could bring a stop to that at any time.

Trump is basically a manchild who sporadically sees Z is the obstacle to peace because Z won't give on certain demands. I don't think it's any more complicated than that.

This latest outburst is him trying to catch falling sand and do everything he can to keep oil and diesel prices down before midterms.

Y'all are searching for malice where stupidity is the more sensible explanation.

Then why did we attack Iran? That is the cause of high fuel prices not the Ukraine war. In fact the Ukraine war has been going on for four years with little impact here.

Rosneft recruiting air defense workers
quote:

Following intensive Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, state oil giant Rosneft has posted job advertisements to recruit military personnel to defend its Kuibyshev Oil Refinery in Samara.

Recruitment Details & Compensation

According to reports by the independent news outlet Vyorstka, the listings were uploaded to the popular Russian job portal HeadHunter.
• The Roles: The refinery is seeking specialized operators for Soviet-era ZSU-23-4 "Shilka" self-propelled anti-aircraft guns and BMP-2 "Berezhok" infantry fighting vehicles.
• Duties: Recruits will join rapid-response units tasked with destroying aerial targets (drones), maintaining heavy weaponry, and protecting strategic defense-industrial sites in the Samara region.
• Pay & Perks: The total monthly compensation is advertised at 249,000 rubles (approximately $2,938 USD). This figure combines a base refinery salary of up to 120,000 rubles with military reserve pay and regional governor bonuses. The package also includes barracks-style hostel housing at the facility, three meals a day, and mandatory health and life insurance.

Context of the Security Shift

The Kuibyshev refinery, along with surrounding oil pumping stations in Samara, has been repeatedly targeted and damaged by long-range Ukrainian drone campaigns. This explicit recruitment of anti-aircraft gunners follows new Russian regulations allowing private companies to acquire heavy military equipment and operate specialized air defense systems to protect critical infrastructure from aerial threats. Candidates must secure Russian Defense Ministry approval and enlist in the armed forces' mobilization reserve to qualify for the positions.
For further independent coverage of these wartime job listings, you can check the reporting via The Moscow Times or view details on the Kyiv Post.

The past six months it has grown to be a problem due to Russia refineries, etc being hit so much.

But screw Trump for making this deal with Russia. I hope Ukraine hits every ship they can that is leaving Russia with oil/diesel/gas.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy
@ZelenskyyUa

What allowing Russia to sell oil products means was heard most clearly in Kyiv just now, when, after repeated attacks on energy facilities with jet-powered “shaheds,” Russia launched a ballistic missile attack as well. Some of the missiles were intercepted. This once again clearly demonstrates Russia’s true intentions. They count on prolonging the war, terrorizing ordinary people, and destroying infrastructure.

Every additional billion dollars they can earn from exports will be spent on nothing but sourcing and importing critical components and equipment to manufacture weapons, upgrading “shaheds,” producing missiles, and recruiting even more mercenaries to fight at the front. Russia’s choice is war. And they will be ready to end it only when they feel that their ability to drag the war out is diminishing.

Unfortunately, the signals Russia received yesterday were entirely different – signals suggesting that it could simply keep attacking. And this needs to be corrected. Strong signals are needed from the United States, Europe, and other partners – signals in support of Ukraine and to RESTRICT Russia’s ability to wage war and terrorize people. Thank you to everyone who stands with Ukraine!

Ukraine is not the problem. Sure ships are getting through Hormuz but they sit and wait for tankers to transfer to. Arab nations are using tankers they own to shuttle the crude.

China isn't exporting because they aren't getting heavily discounted crude from Iran.

Major refineries in the Persian Gulf are loading refined products onto ships.

Global supplies are delicately balanced and the balance has been upset.

There is an entire integrated refinery sitting in a laydown yard in Russian controlled Georgia for 10 years. It came from Canada and for light sweet crude.

Loaded St. Petersburg 18 days ago. ETA Wilmington, NC today.

Trump broke the sanctions long before Friday's announcement. Putin is in total control now and Trump doesn't care anymore.
