The EU is done pretending Russian gas is optional.

Von der Leyen says Moscow’s share of EU fuel purchases has collapsed from 45% to 12%.

LNG imports end January 2027. Pipeline gas ends that autumn.

The Kremlin built its war budget on European energy dependence. That revenue stream is being shut off on a fixed schedule. What remains gets replaced by other suppliers and EU renewables. No renegotiation, no grandfather clause, no quiet carve-out.

Problem is this war was to make Russia stronger especially to the world. Russia has always been greatly concerned about optics.
But this war is doing the opposite. Weak army. Weak navy. Weak tactics. Weak recruits. Weakened energy sector. Weakened economy. Weakened rubel and weakened Putin. Russia always has gotten rid of a weak leader.

Yeah, now there's a Community Note.

It is the Daily Mail, after all — not exactly a beacon of journalistic rigor.

Yandex Data Center Sasovo

This is the big story from last night. Yandex is the "Russian Google" and the data center was their largest. It was only a few percent (I've seen a little over 3%) of total data center capacity; but there were some significant outages and slow downs as a result. I've a feeling that this is like the first strike on Wildberries, and there will be Data Center bingo cards out soon. About 75% of the data centers are in the Moscow area and there are around 100 of them there. It is an interesting new phase. Russia can hit Ukraine almost at will with ballistic missiles but Russia has trouble defending their huge country, with diminishing air defense as well. Ukraine can cause very real pain to Russia in retaliation, especially as they ramp up their own ballistic missile capability. The war is existential for Ukraine. It is also existential now for Putin, but not for the Russian people.

At some point I think Ukraine will start attacking Russia's energy grid-maybe a winter starts to close in.

The successful Ujranian counterattack in the Lyman direction has had knock on effects in the sloviansk direction that has totally fricked the Russians there. Per Rybar:

quote:

Slavyansk is being postponed for now, as the situation deteriorates. Ukrainian formations are stepping up activity, capitalizing on successes in the Lyman area, where fresh UAV operator forces are concentrated in the vicinity of Dibrova.

Russian forces have been driven out of the remnants of Piskunovka and are now defending the approaches to Kriva Luka. The enemy attempts to penetrate there both from the west and across the river from Ozernoye.

West of Kalenikiv, fierce fighting continues. The enemy attacks from Nikolayevka, using previously accumulated reserves. Fierce fighting is also underway for Rai-Aleksandrivka, although the village was recently under full control of the Russian Armed Forces.

An equally complex situation persists on the western bank of the Seversky Donets — Donbas canal. Russian forces continue to hold positions and fight for Malynivka, Tikhonivka and the vicinity of Yurkovka.

Here, the enemy again benefited from premature announcements of complete liberation of settlements, where at that time only small infiltration groups were present, having failed to consolidate. Some villages were declared liberated even before Russian units entered them, which allowed the enemy to accumulate forces there and launch counterattacks.

Aviation continues to strike Slavyansk and Kramatorsk, hitting concentrations of enemy forces. Before their own offensive, Ukrainian formations pulled additional reserves there, which are now coming under fire. The number of FPV strikes is also increasing.

The enemy uses successes on the Lyman direction to develop attacks on Slavyansk, where Russian forces are forced to defend previously occupied positions and spend resources on restoring control instead of developing the offensive. It becomes clear that the possibility of assaulting the urban area is receding to a more distant prospect.

Without control over the forests south of Lyman (and this will require not only stabilizing the situation but also a counter-counteroffensive), an offensive from Siversk toward Slavyansk under flanking fire is doomed to either failure or heavy losses from flanking strikes.

Trump told them years ago. And they laughed.
It's a classic. Trump 1.0 was different in many ways.
quote:

Back in 2018 in remarks made to the UN General Assembly, Trump warned that German that they’ve “become totally dependent on Russian energy” and that “reliance on a single foreign supplier can leave a nation vulnerable to extortion and intimidation.”

Video of the speech, shows German diplomats laughing at Trump’s warning. Now, four years later, the clip has resurfaced on social media as sanction on Russia have led to massive spikes in energy prices in Germany.

One of the members of the delegation seen laugh at Trump and shaking his head was Heiko Maas, a member of the left-wing Social Democratic Party of Germany. At the time, Maas was serving as the country’s foreign minister under then-prime minister Angela Merkel.

At the time, he told reporters “that Trump’s claim regarding the pipeline “does not correspond to reality,” saying that “Germany is not dependent on Russia, especially not on energy issues.”

The Epoch Times reached out to his office for comment [in Sept. 2022]. He refused comment
.

Poster boys of pre-war Euro smugness and arrogance. This attitude was exceeded only by their wilful blindness.

780K thru U of Ill. seems a rather hard thing to catch.
We have 6,000 schools and billions of cash with 27 million students and teachers. Without a deep reveal into who and why I'll wait to hear more.

How many have died since the first death and the short-lived information about it? They're stonewalling their asses off. Every extra day of silence from Moscow just proves even more that it is not bubonic plague.

I think they have been, after Russian attacks on Ukraine energy grid. In a somewhat tit for tat effort. But Russia's only strategy now is to force Ukraine to surrender by trying to destroy everything in Ukraine this winter. And Russia is nearly wide open for Ukraine to hit a huge list of critical Russian targets. It's Mutually Assured Destruction, without nukes (maybe). It's likely that nothing will be off limits for either side. I think this winter either the Ukraine people or the Russian people will have had enough. And the Ukrainian people have a lot more on the line. The maps stopped being relevant months ago.
