If tweet fails to load, click here. The backstory on this strike has been dribbling in over the last two weeks, but this tidbit about Chief of the General Staff Gerasimov leaking the information about Gudkov's location to the Ukrainians tops it all. Woof.
quote:
On July 2, the Ukrainian Defense Forces delivered one of the largest blows to the Russian military command in the entire war. In the village of Korenevo in the Kursk region, approximately 17 km from the frontline, Ukrainian intelligence detected significant activity and movement of Russian troops. The result of the strike on the massing of Russian forces exceeded all expectations.
Russia deployed the forward command post of its most combat-ready unit in this direction - the 155th Marine Brigade - for the offensive on the Sumy region. From Korenevo, the de facto commander of the Russian strike group in the Kursk region, deputy commander of the Russian Navy, major general Mikhail Gudkov, call sign "Varyag," was directing the Russian offensive.
List of Russian officers eliminated in Korenevo, as established so far from Russian sources:
- deputy commander of the Russian Navy - commander of the Russian Navy's coastal and ground forces, major general M. Gudkov;
- deputy commander of the Russian Navy's coastal and ground forces, Colonel N. Shykhaliyev;
- commander of the 155th Brigade, Colonel S. Ilyin;
- chief of staff of the 155th Brigade, colonel L. Bashkadin;
- commander of the 1st battalion of the 155th Brigade, lieutenant colonel I. Zakirov.
The following people were also eliminated: the brigade's artillery chief, air defense chief, communications chief, and chief of the brigade's drone department. Most of their assistants were also killed. Total losses amounted to about 20 killed and 30 wounded Russian soldiers.
Thus, the headquarters of the Russian marine brigade and the leadership of the strike group and ground forces of the Russian Navy were completely eliminated, the Russian offensive in this sector of the front was paralyzed for some time, and command and control over the troops in this area was lost.
The 42-year-old Gudkov was appointed to this post personally by Putin in March 2025. Prior to that, he commanded the same 155th Marine Brigade, and Putin appointed him to increase the fighting capability of all Russian Navy troops.
The 155th Brigade is wel-known for its war crimes - from the very beginning of the war, Gudkov gave orders to execute civilians in Bucha, Irpin, and Hostomel, where the 155th Brigade was operating at the time. Gudkov then openly promoted war crimes, with his brigade and affiliated bloggers repeatedly posting videos of the execution of Ukrainian prisoners of war. Gudkov did this deliberately to prevent his soldiers from surrendering for fear of revenge from the Ukrainians. Gudkov himself, of course, never went on assaults and did not come closer than 15-20 km to the frontline. However, Gudkov was killed along with the entire brigade headquarters that had been carrying out orders to kill civilians and prisoners.
No less interesting than Gudkov's elimination itself is the political fallout and information infighting between supporters of the chief of General Staff Gerasimov and his opponents.
Putin had promoted Gudkov to a position far higher than that of any other Russian brigade commander, and from this post, Gudkov could well have become a rival to Gerasimov to become the chief of the General Staff. According to Russian Z-blogger Alexey Romanov, who is critical of Gerasimov, General Sukhrab Akhmedov, who is completely loyal to Gerasimov and had a poor relationship with Gudkov, has been appointed acting commander of the Russian Navy's coastal and ground forces. Romanov thus directly hinted that Gerasimov himself leaked the information about Gudkov's location to the Ukrainians. In response, Gerasimov's supporter, Russian propagandist Solovyev, accused several bloggers close to Gudkov, including Vladimir Grubnik, of supplying the 155th Brigade with a batch of radio stations that allowed Ukrainians to access the communications system.
Whatever the case may be, the Russians were unable to identify the sources of the information leak.
Let's remember the Golden Rule of organizational advancement - once you have climbed to the top of the ladder, pull it up with you.

Anatoly Artamonov, head of the Russian Federation Council Committee on Budget and Financial Markets, has called for an urgent tax increase to save the Russian budget.
Artamonov stated that Russian authorities need to seek additional revenues for the treasury, which has been hit by declining oil and gas revenues and a worsening economic situation.
According to him, measures must be taken "urgently" because the "economic forecasts have become more pessimistic" and commodity revenues are falling.
Bar graphs, pie charts, the whole enchilada of revenue forecasts. But note particularly his statement, "We are puzzled by our persistant unwillingness to address privatization matters, which represent significant reserves for budget replenishment."
That's aimed directly at the oligarchs, the guys with the real money. A year ago a line like this would have resulted in Artamonov's arrest, but now everyone knows who really wrote that statement.
Stay tuned campers.

"The Kellogg shield" is how some Ukrainians and Western diplomats referred to it in conversations this week. Indeed, since Kellogg's arrival on Monday, Kyiv has been relatively quiet. Air defenses were heard targeting drones passing through the region but they were not targeting the capital.

A downturn in Russia isn’t going to end the war, but it is going to impact their ability to fight the war. It will get harder and harder for Russia to replace their losses.
Sure but a downturn during the war is less likely to happen now than it was say a year ago. I don't believe the likelihood has dropped significantly, but the Russian economy has undoubtedly shown at least some resilience since they switched gears to support wartime production.

I just rarely if ever believe anything you say. Sorry, I am trying to be polite about it. I just don't find you very compelling or credible when half of your "information" comes from "a phone call with a friend" "my buddy in X" "retired pilots" etc etc etc

Considering you lie often that doesn’t mean anything.
Also, if a handful of pilots want to go over there that doesn’t mean anything either.
Nothing is stopping anyone from going to Ukraine to help fight

I don't lie and you have proven you don't know much, MILLENIAL soy boy

You said it 'wasn't true' that maybe 10 pilots would actually go over there and fly for Ukraine, and as supposed proof you provide a video of *1* guy saying he would do it
This whole discussion is pretty silly. There are a few pilots who would do it, but people wouldn't be lining up for it en masse either.
To be a pilot you have to be extremely capable and smart. Its not the same as meatheads who sign up for the Marines because they want to get into a firefight. And also a hint... those types generally aren't signing up to go to Ukraine either, and the barrier of entry for someone like that to go over and fight is much lower than it is for someone to go get a plane to fly in a dogfight against Ruskis.

Slovenia isn’t going to make or break NATO, but if the big boys don’t ratchet up spending as promised then NATO will be in trouble.

Bloomberg - Some of Russia’s top banking executives have concluded that the quality of their loan books is much worse than what official data show and have privately discussed the prospect of seeking a state-funded bailout should the situation worsen, we’re told.
At least three lenders the central bank has identified as systemically important have considered the possibility that they may need to be recapitalized in the next 12 months. Executives have discussed internally how they would raise the prospect with the Bank of Russia if needed.
Officially, the banking system is in relatively good health and levels of bad debt remain well below what they were in past crunches the authorities managed to defuse. Yet some top bankers including Sberbank Chief Executive Herman Gref have have started flagging concerns about the prospect for the next year.
This is what happens when the Kremlin is running your loan book. But there isn't any bailout available, that's just silly capitalist talk. Just do what all the mysterious entries in your accounts receivables are doing - ghost your creditors. If they complain, tell them to call 1-800-Lubyanka.

The European "allies" panic when US weapons get delayed or stalled but when a deal is done to send more they don't want to pay for them. They are all for US weapons to Ukraine as long as the American taxpayer foots the bill.
France and Italy have both dropped out.
If this deal goes through Germany is going to be stuck with paying for it. The German people are going to love that. I wonder if they will back out also like they did with the Taurus missiles.
If the deal is blocked because the European welchers won't pay I hope Trump dumps them all.

NATO Commander confirms preparations to swiftly deliver Patriot systems to Ukraine
July 17, 2025, 06:36 AM
Preparations are underway for the rapid deployment of additional Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Alexus Grynkewich said, Reuters reported on July 17.
He highlighted that the alliance is now finalizing plans to move these systems quickly in response to some of the heaviest Russian strikes Ukraine has experienced since the start of the full-scale war.
“Preparations are ongoing, and we’re working very closely with the Germans to transfer the Patriot systems," he said.
"I’ve been instructed to move as fast as possible.”

This is what happens when the Kremlin is running your loan book.
Sberbank accounts for more than a third of all bank assets in Russia.
Both banks can continue to operate forever if need be even with negative capital because the bank regulatory authorities will wink and smile at them. even if both banks are technically insolvent.
The issue is will they maintain adequate liquidity to meet depositors withdrawal requirements and loan customers borrowing needs?
That's where the Central Bank of Russia comes in.
Vladimir Putin will simply direct the CBR to provide loans to those banks for their liquidity needs no matter the cost or optics.

Wow, I wasn't aware that when Ukraine prevents a large percentage of the drones from reaching their targets that they just evaporate. I wasn't aware of that. I thought they would eventually fall to the ground and go boom.

I have been trying to tell you this going on all over. There are a lot of leaky Russians rn for multiple different reasons people are getting less afraid of Putin and looking out for themselves.
