I’ve been out of the loop on this thread for a while. I just saw a video on YouTube claiming Russia is opening a new offensive in the north close to the border with Belorussia. Anyone in the know on this? Legit? Fake news?

I haven't heard anything about it. When is that offensive supposed to kick off?

ETA: I haven't found anything yet about it, where did you see it?

It hurts Russia... I guess... I hope he doesn't have a change of heart over that... nice that he's letting the captured Russians on the tankers go while locking up everybody else.

Russia has already lost, but it has yet to be determined just how much.

It looks like the new hypersonic Oreshnik missile that struck Lviv last night was not even loaded with explosives. Just depended on the kinetic energy of the freefalling 'warhead' parts to damage whatever they landed on by chance.

quote:

This is what a strike by a Russian "Oreshnik"/"Kedr" (RS-26) ballistic missile looks like, tonight in Lviv

Again, without warheads, just empty submunitions - duds. Just like a year and a half ago in Dnipro. HOW THIS MISSILE WORKS - The RS-26 reaches its target, splits into parts, and then the combat unit itself is divided into many small hypersonic warheads, which in the "original" missile have a special combat unit (a nuclear one)

DISTANCE - If we measure from Kapustin Yar to Lviv, it's somewhere around 1800-2000 kilometers in 13-15 minutes. The speed was around 12,000 kilometers per hour

On radars, such a target is not visible, most often not until the moment of descent on the target

quote:

Russia spent a lot of money to drop the equivalent of 36 red Olympic standard weight plates across the Lviv region.

The kinetic "warhead" has 4X less power than a FAB-250 bomb
.
quote:

It's true. It was 'Oreshnik' that struck the Ukrainian Lviv region today. Again, like in November 2024 in Dnipro. But due to its low precision, Putin can't rely on this impressive high-velocity derivative of RS-26 ‘Rubezh’ IRBM to destroy assets in Ukraine (unless they are nuclear- or chemical-armed).

Putin's only purpose in launching it today towards Lviv is to escalate intimidation on the West, including Europe, amid increased pressure from Washington and the European capitals to make a peace deal.

Also, don't believe in Russian propaganda about the "underground gas facility" destroyed. In fact, it targeted an location of a very deep network of natural gas chambers to store natural gas inside earth. It's basically exhausted reserves that keep being refilled every season.

The Oreshnik's six small, even nor armed with explosives, warhead fragments barely scratched the ground surface.
quote:

"Oreshnik" or the most expensive brick in the Universe. The fricker bleated about new "physical" principles, kinetic weapon. Let's break it down. The explosion of 1 kg of TNT releases 5 MJ of energy. An ordinary FAB-250, carrying 94 kg of TNT, explodes with 450 MJ of energy. What the fricker launched released 36 elements with a total mass of 630 kg of concrete. Concrete is 45% denser than TNT. When accelerated on the final stretch to a speed of 10M, each of the 36 "bricks" hits the Earth, releasing 100 MJ of energy. Which is equivalent to the explosion of 25 kg of TNT. 4 times less than the FAB-250.

I saw this video on YouTube. I’ve never heard of this channel, thus my skepticism. Basically, if what this die is saying is true, it sounds like it would be limited offensive basically to make the Ukrainians spread their reserves out.

I watched it. Time will tell, but it's not imminent at this point.

I don't think Russia has the combat power to pull off something like this; their military is spent. Gone are the days of large Russian mechanized assaults. They have resorted to using horses and donkey's to supply parts of the front.

Watching videos from the war, I haven't seen a Russian Ural truck in a couple of months now. They have been using Chinese ATV's, but those are very rare as well.

It hurts them. Putin loses another ally and looks even weaker in the process since they can't do anything about it, it gives control over even more oil - Putin's biggest bargaining chip - to the West, and it makes the Russian military look like even bigger amateurs.

On top of all this it exposes the shortcomings of "Spheres of Influence" even more - does Venezuela fall under Russian or American influence? Or even China's since they supply China with oil?

Once again, Russia is F'd.

One of the good things about drone warfare is the accuracy of it.

The horses and donkey's get a chance to live....

Just watched Trump on Fox News:

"Russia lost 31,000 soldiers killed last month. That's dead troops. 26,000 the month before. 27,000 the month before that. That's terrible."

Kyiv Mayor Klitschko urges residents to 'temporarily leave city' as Russia targets critical infrastructure
LINK

quote:

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko called on residents of the capital, if possible, to leave the city after a Russian attack on Jan. 9 left half of the city's apartment buildings without heating.

As temperatures dropped below -10°C (14°F), Russia launched a mass attack on Ukraine overnight with 242 drones and 36 missiles, with Kyiv and its surrounding areas being the primary targets, the Air Force reported. The attack hit energy infrastructure facilities and multiple residential buildings in the capital, killing at least four people and injuring 19 others.

"We are doing everything we can to resolve this as quickly as possible. However, the combined attack on Kyiv last night was the most devastating for the capital's critical infrastructure," Klitschko said.

As of the time of publication, heating was knocked out in about 6,000 apartment buildings across Kyiv — nearly half of the city's total — following the Russian attack overnight, according to the mayor.

The city is also facing water supply interruptions, with emergency power outages being introduced.

Ukraine does not have the capacity to return the favor to Moscow.

Sounds like Trump needs to stop listening to the US military's assessment and give JB a call to get the real number.

Ukraine absolutely has the capacity; what it needs is the OK from the US and Europe to do it.

I believe that would be bad policy akin to what Germany did in WWII. Remember, they started bombing civilian targets in response to England inadvertently bombing Berlin. That saved English air fields.

Ukraine needs to stay the course and wreck the Russian military/industrial complex as much as possible.
