Trump will not stay on a losing side... if he's convinced Putin is weakened, things could get very interesting

Bullseye.
Too many anarcho-capitalists somehow came to believe POTUS was isolationist. POTUS armed Ukraine before Russia invaded - when the democrats did not want to. Like with Iran, it’s not a “backstab” that he is not an isolationist. He never campaigned on or claimed to be one.
That’s not to say questioning spending billions on Ukraine is unreasonable. The US has spent hundreds of billions at this point on Ukraine and it’s a fight they can’t win. Russia has become a highly militarized society as a result of years of war. The only way this turns into a “win” for the US at this point is if Europe fully re arms, making it politically feasible for the US to walk away (which we should have done post Cold War).
A lot of the Ukraine Bros seem to believe that it will get better once Putin dies. Say that happens in the next year or two, before Russia is able to fully capitulate Ukraine, and Russia descends into chaos from how hyper militarized and militia based it’s become. How is that a win for the US? The US now has to worry about monitoring thousands of nuclear bombs from falling onto the black market. Good for Ukraine, sure, not good for the US (or anyone else in the world).
Trump seems to think he can bring Russia to the table by playing hard ball, and his instincts are usually right. I would still prefer to walk away at this point. Russia and Ukraine can both blow each other up, they seem to enjoy it.
The situation may have been different if Zelensky hadnt stonewalled POTUS for several months, Ukraine loses leverage everyday the conflict continues.

Politico: Trump now backs tough Russia sanctions bill, Graham says
The bill has been tweaked to add presidential waiver authority.
A bill targeting Russia with substantial new sanctions is gaining momentum in the Senate, with a key GOP senator signaling Tuesday that President Donald Trump is now on board.
“We’re moving,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), the bill’s author, adding that Trump “told me it’s time to move so we’re going to move.”
...
Behind the scenes, Graham and Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) tweaked the bill to provide expanded presidential waiver authority. That, they believe, addresses the White House’s push for more flexibility for Trump.
While the existing bill would let Trump waive sanctions on nations purchasing Russian oil or uranium for 180 days, the revised bill provides for a second 180-day waiver, Graham said. Invoking the second waiver would prompt a congressional vote, though he did not detail what the vote would entail.

It turned out to be nothing but a publicity play by Graham. Peak cowardness in DC.

The ‘Nazi Azov’ narrative is pure Kremlin disinfo. I served as an instructor with Azov, none of what Russia claims holds up. Before 2022, there were fewer than 2,000 active servicemen & women in a country of 40M and while extremism is in most walks of life, 99% of Azov are not Nazi at all. Made up of all of Ukraine’s demographic, Azov only means the region, like the Azov Sea, and nothing else.
Meanwhile, Russia invaded with Wagner (named after Hitler’s fave composer) and Rusich, actual neo-Nazi units who filmed war crimes, used sledgehammers, and recruited murderers from prisons to invade Ukraine

Getting real now boys...
"Illegal distillation" is an ancient tradition in Russia (as well as the Florida Parishes) but you have to have potatoes for wodka. I predict the corn crop will disappear days prior to harvest.

"Vodka production in Russia has significantly decreased, with a notable 13.2% drop in the first five months of 2025. This decline is primarily attributed to a sharp decrease in exports and a concurrent shortage of potatoes, a key ingredient. The situation is further compounded by a rise in illegal distillation due to increased taxes and minimum prices on legal vodka.

strategic terrorism update...
'Nearly everything was aimed at Lutsk' — Russia launches record 741 drones, missiles, targeting western Ukraine
July 9, 2025 3:47 am (Updated: July 9, 2025 1:39 pm)
Russia launched what seems to be its largest missile and drone attack against multiple Ukrainian cities overnight on July 9, with the far-western city of Lutsk coming under the heaviest attack of the war.
Late spring and early summer in Ukraine have been marked by disturbingly frequent mass attacks on civilian targets, with Russia regularly terrorizing cities with ballistic and cruise missiles alongside record-breaking numbers of kamikaze drones.
Explosions rocked Kyiv at around midnight on July 9, according to Kyiv Independent journalists on the ground. Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced that Russian drones were attacking the city center and that air defenses were shooting down targets.
Ukraine's Air Force reported that dozens of Russian attack drones and ballistic missiles were also targeting Ukraine's far-west regions, with alerts of overhead drones approaching the western cities of Lutsk, Lviv, Khmelnytskyi, and Ternopil.
Russia launched what seems to be the most extensive aerial attack against Ukraine during the full-scale war. Russian forces deployed 728 Shahed-type attack drones and decoys, as well as seven Kh-101 or Iskander-K cruise missiles and six Kinzhal missiles, the Air Force reported.
Ukrainian air defenses shot down 296 drones and all seven cruise missiles, while 415 drones disappeared from radars, according to the statement.
"Most of the targets were shot down. Our interceptor drones were used – dozens of (Russian) targets were downed, and we are scaling up this technology," President Volodymyr Zelensky said on X.
Explosions were heard in the city of Lutsk in western Volyn Oblast just before 4 a.m. local time, Suspilne reported, amid warning of drones and missiles overhead. The city was one of the hardest hit during the attack.
Volyn Oblast Governor Ivan Rudnytskyi said the region had approximately 50 drones and five missiles present in the airspace overnight, adding that "nearly everything was aimed at Lutsk."
Lutsk Mayor Ihor Polishchuk said that a fire damaged an "industrial site" as well as a garage, in what he called the "most massive Russian attack" on the city since the start of full-scale war.
Elsewhere in the region, the roof of a home in Khmelnytskyi Oblast caught fire, the regional military administration said.
At least one person was injured amid the attack, with a woman sustaining a chest fracture in the city of Brovary in Kyiv Oblast, the regional military administration reported.
Ukraine's Air Force warned late on July 8 that Russia had launched MiG-31 aircraft from the Savasleyka airfield in Nizhny Novgorod, putting the entire country under an hours-long active missile threat. Swarms of drones were also heading towards multiple cities in Ukraine, the military said.
The Polish Air Force said it scrambled fighter jets amid the attack to protect Poland's airspace. The air raid alerts were lifted in western Ukraine around 6:15 a.m. local time, after nearly seven hours of warnings from the Air Force.
Explosions were also reported in communities closer to the front line, including Dnipro, Sumy, as well as over Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

My take on the relationship between Trump and Putin. From the start, Trump recognized the fact that Putin is the ultimate decision maker on there being a peace deal. The US has much more influence on the actions of Ukraine than it has on the actions of Russia. This is why we saw Trump put lots of public pressure on Ukraine in order to bring them into line with Trumps desire for peace. At the same time we were pressuring Ukraine, Trump, realizing we don't have as much leverage with Russia, was playing nice with Putin, and giving public support to Russia's positions. This was all part of his negotiating strategy to broker a peace deal. He has now realized that it is Russia that is standing in the way of peace and that Putin has been dragging him along for as long as possible. Before he came into office, Trump was very clear that if Russia were not open to peace, he would give Ukraine more support than Biden did. I don't think Trump wants to do this because it will prolong the war, but Putin has created the situation where that is Trump's only alternative. For those who were paying attention, there are no surprises here. People didn't listen to Trump's early messaging on this and only heard what they wanted to hear. I believe that Trump badly wants to end this war and he's realized the only way to do this is to put maximum pressure on Russia. He tried it one way and that didn't work, now I suspect we'll see him go the other way with it.
It’s just crazy it took him this long to realize that he can’t trust Putin and that he can’t take him seriously, and that Putin is the problem here. Many people were telling him these things and he didn’t want to listen. He just had to find out for himself, unfortunately though, that’s a costly mistake. We don’t have the time to make the wrong decisions/assumptions in a conflict like this.

Trump isn’t stupid, he tried the high road with Putin to give him an off ramp. Putin refused to take it. Now the only option is to aid Ukraine and enforce sanctions.
