The country’s largest union representing federal workers is calling for lawmakers to pass a short-term spending measure to end the government shutdown immediately, urging Democrats to abandon their current position and join Republicans in supporting a stopgap solution.

“Both political parties have made their point, and still there is no clear end in sight,” American Federation of Government Employees President Everett Kelley wrote in a statement first shared with NBC News. “It’s time to pass a clean continuing resolution and end this shutdown today. No half measures, and no gamesmanship.”

The statement could increase pressure on Democrats to budge from their current stance. Senate Democrats have insisted that they won’t vote to reopen the government without a commitment from Republicans and President Donald Trump on extending health care subsidies through the Affordable Care Act, which are set to expire at the end of the year. Without them, health insurance premiums on Obamacare markets will skyrocket for many individuals and families.

That's a huge base and a lot of their stroke in the federal government. This combined with the pressure from welfare benefits being shut down... I don't think the Dems have the political will to make it through another vote.

That's probably just the AFGE (American Federation of Government Employees). Once you start figuring in the others (NFFE, NTEU, NAGE), because their interests align in this, you're looking at ~1.2M federal employees.

The democrats don't want the government opened until after Nov 1 when the Healthcare tax credits expire. They believe the country will turn on us Republicans when they see how expensive their Healthcare is.

Schumer is afraid that if he bends the knee, it will give AOC the potential to overtake him in a Senate run.

I've got news for him, though. He led his extremist Senate Party to this. If his constituents decide they want AOC instead, he's done. It doesn't matter what moves he makes or positions he takes. But he doesn't care. He just wants that power of being who he is and remaining in leadership of the Etatist Kleptocracy.

I cannot believe that it's within actual reason to see a plausible scenario where Alexandria Ocoasio fricking Cortez could move to the Senate and potentially immediately become its Majority Leader. Clown World.

Why do I have the feeling this is not going to work out well for people who show up for work every day in the private sector?

I can see it now.....people with GEDs and four kids posting their first post-shutdown videos on Tick Tock.....as they triumphantly pull apart the seal on a big bag of Fun'Yuns or Doritos.

That is absolutely the point, but does it outweigh the amount of Democrat supporters on welfare who won't get benefits next week along with the massive amount of federal employees who will continue to not get paid?

The longer it goes on, the less it plays in the Dem favor and more of their supporters take the stance that the Dems are preferring healthcare for illegals over their own constituents.

Exactly. POTUS has the biggest microphone of them all and he has not even begun to message. As a matter of fact, he knows how huge this is going to hurt the dems and marxists though they see it as the leverage they need.

The Republicans need to run ads on a loop explaining that the subsidy doesn't run out for over 2 months and the democrats are holding you hostage over this

Translation: Obamacare is the failure we were warned about in 2009.

Notice how temporary measures in times of emergencies suddenly become permanent entitlements? That's how you wind up $38 trillion in debt

My favorite aspect is Chucky telling his base, on 11/2, that Nov. benefits were lost during the shutdown and will resume on 12/1.

Don't think he is worried about her becoming the 'leader' - but only that she could defeat him for his Senate seat. That's all he's worried about
