It used to be for national tragedies.

Now it is down so much it is meaningless.

A symbol of our emotionally driven, attention seeking age.

Dolly is not the hill to die on here. She was an exceptional American.

I would make an exception for Dolly, though, just saying. That lady is a National treasure..

Dolly fits that. She was almost universally admired by every American. I can think of anyone else in American history that can be true for.

It's overdone.

But it is warranted for Dolly.

I’m sorry you had to go through this.

I’m lowering my flag half staff for you.

Dolly Parton earned every dollar she made. And she gave away half a billion dollars of that money she earned. I’m from South Carolina and I would lower the flag to half staff for Dolly before I would have for Lindsay Graham. How’s that?

It needs to be strictly for members of our military.

The question is would Dolly be ok with it?

Rush Limbaugh was admired by every true American. And despised by anti-Americans.

My god man, relax.

Lady is an American Icon, I have serious doubts any American military member sees this is as an insult to whatever you are mumbling about.

Especially if they know anything about her.

As a side note, DollyWood theme park has some legit rides to my surprise.

Rush had many enemies.

If you don't have enemies, you don't have character.

I like Dolly Parton just fine but a national, week long half staff is extremely goofy.

We live in the age of meh

Mostly with 24 / 7 / 365 "news" coverage that is just infotainment dressed up as news. Tend to agree Dolly was an exceptional American, not sure a week is the answer, as OP notes, we will get to a point where it is not special anymore and will lose the point it makes.

As you age you are in the hospital more and more often to see friends and family who are reaching the end and it has not gone unnoticed that the flags there are most always flying at half mast, which is the point OP was making, not a personal attack on Dolly.

What qualifies someone as a drug addict ? Is it someone who needs a drug everyday for say pain relief ? Or how about heart ailments or blood pressure? How about those that seek chemical imbalances corrected ? Or is it someone who rob or kills for money to get high ? In Rush’s case he wasn’t stealing or killing to get high’s so that’s out and he wasn’t using after to alter himself to feeling good for the fun of it so that wouldn’t fit the narrative either. Was it pain, imbalances or something that was mentally challenging him ? I suspect like a lot of people it was a combination of all three. I wouldn’t lump them in as dregs of society as you are implying just to belittle his character
