I’m probably being pedantic…but can we really count King Crimson’s cover of Heroes if Robert Fripp played on Bowie’s original?
My choice changes by the day and the genre. Today is jazz fusion.

Im listening to this right now, and it might just be the sickest shite ever recorded. Dont know how ive never heard this before. Unfiltered, unrelenting, psychedelic voodoo jungle funk.
The genius of Miles was that he was fearless. He conceived something in Music and then he executed it. Most of the time it was great. I think “Dark Magus” was “Bitches Brew” on steroids, but man, I marvel to this day that Miles even conceived of that album! That was the album that jazz purists of the time just weren’t ready for. Today…yes, we can handle it!

Congratulations. The feminist movement has done well in emasculating you. I’m 65 years old and have been admiring attractive women for basically my entire life. When that day comes when I DON’T smile when I see a pretty woman, I’m expecting to see the Death Angel, and with the quickness. But if you want to deny your masculinity, that’s fine. Free will and all of that.

I'm looking for some help here. A few years back, I made an overt attempt to "get into" Miles Davis. It just didn't click. What are some good entry points to try again?
IF I was starting over with Miles, I would start with Birth of the Cool. He made his bones in the jazz world with bebop, but to me, bebop belongs to Charlie Parker and everyone else evolved from him.
Then I would move to Milestones BEFORE going to Kind of Blue. The wondrous thing about “ Kind of Blue” is that it’s an one off. That particular lineup never recorded together again with Miles. If you make it to this point, ask me again because there’s a couple of paths you can follow after Kind of Blue

I grew up with Kind of Blue. And it’s still one of my favorite Miles albums. But now that I’m older, I prefer Sketches of Spain more and more!

Agreed that On The Corner isn’t one of Miles’ best. But, when you change the course of Music (not just jazz) at least 3 times, you can put out a clunker. If you listen to On The Corner again, you’ll notice more experimentation from Bitches Brewplus him planting the seeds of future crosses between hip hop and jazz
I picked up my bass guitar at age 65. Still a rank beginner but enjoy having “Eureka” moments when I realize how to actually play something! And yes, practice is ESSENTIAL. I can spend an hour just playing root notes and think nothing of it!
I used to drive back and forth between Charleston and Columbia often when I still worked. South Carolina coeds could hold their own against anyone. BUT the top rank used to be held by College of Charleston and it wasn’t really close. After 2000, CofC still has outstanding talent, but the number of butt fugly shebeasts has increased tenfold. One of my former colleagues who taught at CofC used to invite me every fall for lunch and “talent evaluations”. Miss those days!

Bootsy is still pushing out jams. He’s more of a coordinator and collaborator these days, but the man definitely recognizes talent!

And your low country cuisine is rather lame as well.
Them’s fighting words. The only peer for Lowcountry cuisine is N’Awlins. But let me guess: you did the tourist thing in Charleston and ate at a downtown Charleston restaurant. You actually ate an interpretation of what a foodie considers Lowcountry cuisine.
Next time you’re here, set aside some time and drive up to Moncks Corner. Preferably in the morning. The restaurant is Howard’s. No menu. Just tell the waitress what you want because EVERYTHING is cooked from scratch. Their focus is on the daily specials tho if you want lunch. The cooks are 4 rather Rubenesque black ladies who can cook in their sleep. You will leave very close to being in a food coma. THIS is Lowcountry cuisine. They are only open for breakfast and lunch tho.
I’ll preach this to the mountaintops. The RINOs are waiting for Clyburn to die. They are scared to death to be called racists. I’m old enough to remember when SC 6 was first created. It was gerrymandered then and for the life of me I don’t see why it can’t be redrawn now.

If you’ve ever had the displeasure of being forced to traverse I-16 between Macon and Savannah, you’d understand. The worst interstate highway in the Southeast, period. Certainly the most boring.
I will see I-16 and raise you I-26 between Columbia and Charleston. I’m at the point where I will take U.S. 176 rather than risk nodding off on 26! And yes, I have driven I-16 more than a few times

I keep telling myself to stay away from rage bait threads like this. But if I do, I tacitly condone it.
I am a 7 times over grandfather. I not only grew up in a two parent household, I can go back 6 generations and name each grandparent. Not one of them were born out of wedlock I have 2 sons who have given me 6 of my grands. They are active in child care because my DiLs have to work as well.
I can’t speak for an entire race. But I do grow weary of being lumped in with the irresponsible sperm donors aided and abetted by a political party that only wants a permanent underclass. A permanent underclass dependent on them for their very survival.
I can only be the example that my sons and grandsons can follow. THAT, I can do, and will do. FWIW, I worked for 47 years. Finally retired, and my new employers are my grandkids who adore bossing their Papa around!

Want to know just how wonderful it was to be a teen in the 70’s? This wasn’t one of the Isley Brothers’ greatest hits, but it can hold its own with ANY funk anthem! The entire “Winner Takes All” album was banger after banger

You beat me to “Fencewalk”. I salute you for your knowledge of proper funk! I listen to Mandrill to this day just for that horn section. As y’all can tell by some of my posts here, I’m all in for horn sections. Here’s another one:

I’ll be the first to admit rap ain’t for everyone. And yes, some of it absolutely sucks. I stopped trying to convince people that have made up their minds years ago. Same thing with jazz and reggae. I love both, but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

I remember that one well! But, this flute solo smack dab in the middle of a funk anthem is one of my favorites. The solo starts at 2:38 if you want to skip ahead to it:

For me, Distant Relatives was a major disappointment. After Damian Marley’s masterpiece Welcome to Jamrock with his collab with Nas Road to Zion, I thought Distant Relatives would revolutionize the fusion of reggae and rap. After waiting 5 years, DR was finally released. I bought it the first day. After listening, my only thought was “I waited 5 years for THIS?” Even today, DR is a solid “meh” and I thought I would never say that about Nas!

I have been torn on my opinion on this since the very first time I heard it. The Who. “Eminence Front”. There’s DEFINITELY funk in it. The groove is solid. The Ox can stay in the pocket in his sleep! I guess if it was any other band besides The Who, I would definitely call it funk!

Friend, I was on hand during the Golden Age of rap/hip hop. I feel sad for my grandkids that they are stuck with the likes of Drake and Kendrick.
