John McWhorter shuts down (and shuts up) Don Lemon on reparations.

Don't worry, it's not a CNN link.
You can see the gears grinding to a halt in Lemon's head when McWhorter makes this point and I am a bit disappointed in myself that I have never thought about it in this way. McWhorter tells Lemon we've already had reparations. They were called affirmative action and various other civil rights legislation in the 1960s and 1970s.

I love John McWhorter. His lectures on language and linguistics are awesome.

As of today, the estimate spent on Johnson's War on Poverty is around $25,000,000,000,000.
But yeah, the issue is American has not yet spent enough...

I’ve used that argument many times. The welfare state was reparations.

To be fair, the segment I saw Lemon wasn’t talking anyway. The full segment would be worth watching to see the full exchange because McWhorter brought up some real great points.

Reparations never stops. South Korea demanded reparations from Japan for WWII atrocities. The Japs gave them a bundle of money.
Ten years later SK is back 'We need more reparations.'
Japs said 'frick off.'

Turns out, this is the correct response when someone "demands" something. Problem is, we seem to have forgotten how to say it out loud at this point.

I am in favor of reparations.
Let’s create a bank account and call it Slavery Reparations. Then we demand COVID reparations from China with prior agreement that all funds will be deposited into the Slavery Reparations account. Give recipients the option of a single lump payment or a non-transferable annuity.

Or how about we just demand China make us whole for the economic, social and political buttfricking they performed on us and forget the rest of what you said.

It is never enough. Why voters cannot get this is beyond me.

I love his great courses.
How the hell he makes origins of languages I will never know, but he does!

I'd say it is the highest principle if you want a debate to actually accomplish something constructive - otherwise you are just dueling on the propaganda battlefield and nobody wins - everyone loses.

Any reoperations will work exactly like the stimulus checks.
There won't be a TV in Walmart. Crab leg prices will go through the roof and a year later things will be the way they have been for years.

Nobody alive today is responsible for something that happened 160+ years ago. If we are going to hold people accountable for things in the past then we all need to move out of the USA and give the land back to the Native Americans. Maybe NYC needs to be given back to the Indians. As bad a slavery was, genocide on the natives was much worse. Nobody talks about them.
A lot of former slaves were offered 40 acres of land and a mule. They accepted this as payment. The check book is closed.

Essentially our national debt.
