The Louisiana Governor has raised taxes throughout his term in order to pay for his pet interests but avoid persecution. He hit the sweet spot of the public wanting improvement and reluctantly willing to pay for it. What’s unfortunate is that now his record needs to be put before the public.

What have your increase in taxes paid for? Where can you show a tangible benefit in your life impinged by the Governor?

The problem is you still have traffic gridlock in Baton Rouge. You have Mississippi stealing sports gambling taxes and tourism revenue from under our nose. Corruption in New Orleans still exists except its culture is falling behind the Times. Of course we’d like to pay our teachers more, but we should require improvement or merit based raises based on student achievement.

Thanks for wasting $30 million in Medicaid and trying to give teachers a free pass. It’s a great deflection tactic and positively results in buying people’s vote. The fraud of this administration masquerading as moderate when acting as a tax and spend liberal will soon appear.

Same last name, same bull shite.

It’s simple, business or cronyism. I’d like to think it’s business but I don’t see anything that stands out. It’s probably stashed in the LED tax credits.

We need a businessman or honest broker. Any new state gas tax has to be spent solely on the stated road improvements. Once improvements are made and accounted for, the tax is repealed. No delays or renewals favored and all measures should be made to complete the project within 11% over the initial projected time without penalty paid to the State.

Teachers have gotten one raise in the last 12 years and that was 580$ a year roughly 1%.

Louisiana is at the bottom of of teacher pay average in the country and education scores is a result of that. Good teachers are leaving because we don't pay them.

I agree the state has a multitude of problems but saying teacher pay should be down the list is being willfully ignorant of one of the major problems in this state.

How do you judge merit? Do teachers that teach advanced classes get a raise because they are gifted with children who's intelligence is greater than the average student. Do special needs teachers get the shaft while having arguably the more difficult job. Do we really want the government deciding who gets what raises based on test scores that don't tell the whole story?

Or do we at least try to get teacher average pay in line with the rest of the country so the talented teachers stop leaving the state.

I like the latter option but you can continue to push your bad narrative.

The teachers should get a raise but it should come from the bloated salaries of school administrations and cutting positions in the central offices

That's not why the scores are low. Catholic school teachers get paid less than public school teachers and their scores are fine.

JBE’s different shade is being a spending-taxer instead of a taxing-spender!

Also, teacher pay has very little effect upon student scores. Parental involvement, student motivation, high expectations, and curriculum are critical.

Teacher motivation is important, but it is a combination of work environment, student conduct, student motivation, work load, and pay.

You do it by having two tests for each class/subject taught. One at the beginning of the year. One at the end. Same level of difficulty, same level of skills tested, but different tests. All grades by teachers given a set answer key with all the tests anonymous. None of the tests are to be multiple choice.

If you take a kid from getting a zero to getting a 35, you did a hell of a job. If you take a kid from a 99 to a 100, congrats but the kid was already proficient.

But if you take a kid from a 50 to a 51, what the frick did you actually do?

Assholes in my district voted to increase taxes because it had the word "increase fireman pay" in it. Let's forget about the other bullshite that's in this bill that simply is chalked up to government waste.
These are the same idiots that voted for Edwards over Vitter because they were afraid Vitter would break into their homes and start groping prostitutes on their kitchen table.

Baton Rouge, and Louisiana, is full of idiots. Edwards will get re-elected because we are stupid. We hear "fireman raises, policeman raises, teacher raises" and push the button for "TAKE MY MONEY, I'M STUPID". Never do we stop and think, "why can't we cut spending in other areas to increase pay"? Instead it's the same idiots who can't be bothered to read passed the headlines that say, "DERRRR, TEACHER GOOD, TEACHER NEED RAISE".

Bossier has a large property tax increase election May 4, 2019, if passed will be used to increase teacher pay and all school employee pay. Question - why does supply and demand not apply to teacher jobs?

Yep, Heroes for your safety and teachers for the chirrens. One reason is because they have single-issue elections which allow the government folk a chance at outvoting the non-gov folk.
