doesn't Osteen claim that his personal money comes primarily from his merchandise, not directly via church donations?
I don't doubt it does... But as a man of god and who is preaching to live by the bible, live modestly, help others, etc... Should he be allowed to separate his "Preaching" from his "Personal Life". Should his personal life mimic what he teaches?

He should be "allowed" to do whatever the hell he wants. If his market decides it doesn't like his "product" any longer, he'll have to do something else. I don't get the feeling he's the sleazebag liar that Robert Tilton was.

HubbaBubba,
I was going to mention Ed Young last night, but I was drawing a blank on his name. He's another one who took a similar tactic as Joel Osteen, in that he severely dilutes the actual message in order to appeal to a larger audience. He was very successful in drawing a younger crowd, and like you said, it was more of a rock star-like environment than a setting where the Bible was being taught.
I think one difference of opinion here concerns how we view a Christian ministry, and what the priorities of a Christian ministry should be. Obviously, some of you consider it to be just like any other business. Revenues come in, and the owners of the ministry (business) are free to take as much of that revenue for themselves as they see fit.
That's your right to see it that way. But just understand, a lot of Christians view the dynamics of a Christian ministry as a different dynamic. First of all, ministers are supposed to feel like their is a calling on their lives to preach the Gospel. Secondly, their first priority is supposed to be saving souls, and preaching and teaching the Word.
Are they supposed to take a vow of poverty? Absolutely not. But a lot of believe that many of these preachers have their priorities out of line. Surely, when a family has used a ministry in order to become multi-millionaires, saving souls and preaching the Word has not been their predominant priorities. for those of us who understand and value the Word, we also know that Joel Osteen really doesn't even preach the Word. That would be fine if he didn't claim to be a Christian minister, but he does.
Appreciate everybody's opinion about this. My own opinion is a very strongly held one, and it bothers me greatly that far too many people like Joel Osteen have used the Christian faith as a vehicle to become unbelievably wealthy.

He teaches prosperity through God's blessings. On the surface, if someone is looking at his personal life, this is how it appears. But this is not the message of Jesus.

I'll bet they didn't find any Bibles. Money and feel good pamphlets is his religeon.

He does not take a salary from Lakewood Church. That's fantastic. He does get benefits - cars, housing, healthcare, retirement, etc. So he's not working for free.
But Joel Osteen Ministries is separate from the church. JOM does the books, the events (Night of Hope), has their own donations pool (to the ministry - not the church), online store. This is where the really money goes.
The church's website asks if your donation should be a tithe, general missions or building. JOM just takes your money without explaining where it's going.
If you have any issues, you can call Lakewood Church's Customer Service Hotline at 713-491-1506 OR call JOM's Customer Service at 888-567-JOEL.

I agree, but doesn't mean that I can't think he is a piece of shite scam artist who is using his religion and playing to peoples emotions to have a cushy life.

Is it a business or a church or both? Should his business be tax exempt while ours are not?

Bottom line he makes millions off selling a soft-christian message.

I agree wholeheartedly with you. I wonder what the attendance of this church would be if he preached a message of repentance? I guarantee it wouldn't be 43,500 and he wouldn't need the Compaq Center.

I'm no fan of your posts on here, but this one actually was very good to read. I've never had anything against Osteen, although, I admit I haven't followed him closely in a while.
I got to see him once about 7-8 yrs ago, really interesting when they go into these large concert halls/NBA arenas for their nationwide tours.

I've got no problem with building wealth. I'm a capitalist, but just don't tell me you're a Christian....
So if you're a Christian, you have an obligation to be poor? What's the line? Am I allowed to have a job making 50k per year? 40k? 30k? Can I even have a job? Am I allowed to have shoes or is that a 1st world luxury that I'll burn in hell for?
The notion that people of Christian faith who have wealth are somehow phonies, hypocrites or bad people is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.
