Why did he kneel though? They were chanting U-S-A and he kneeled. Then they stopped chanting. And then they seemed to take a brief oath (or something) by raising their right hands.

I would almost go with that but it appears they were adult women. It almost (almost) seems like he was attempting to stop the very weak U-S-A chant (which - seemingly - he did).
